CHAPTER 1 – THE GIRL EVERYONE LAUGHED AT
The school gym echoed with laughter.
Hundreds of students crowded around a circle, phones raised high, eager to capture what they believed would be another unforgettable moment of humiliation.
Standing alone in the middle was sixteen-year-old Anna Carter.
She wore the same oversized gray hoodie she had worn almost every day that semester. The sleeves were too long, her sneakers were faded, and her backpack had been stitched together so many times that it barely held its shape.
To most students, Anna was simply "the poor girl."
She rarely spoke.
She never complained.
She always chose the last seat in class and disappeared before anyone noticed.
Unfortunately, today she couldn't disappear.
Blocking her path stood Logan Brooks, captain of the football team.
Tall.
Athletic.
Popular.
Feared.
Teachers praised his talent.
Students admired him.
No one dared challenge him.
Especially not Anna.
Logan folded his arms with a mocking grin.
"So..." he announced loudly, making sure the entire gym heard every word. "The little genius embarrassed me during chemistry class."
Several students laughed.
Anna looked down.
"I only answered the teacher's question."
"Oh, really?" Logan sneered. "You knew the answer before I did. Now everyone thinks I'm stupid."
"I wasn't trying to..."
"Doesn't matter."
He stepped closer until only inches separated them.
The gym suddenly became silent.
"You owe me an apology."
Anna quietly replied,
"I'm sorry if I embarrassed you."
Logan smirked.
"Not good enough."
He pointed toward the polished gym floor.
"Kneel."
Gasps spread through the crowd.
Some students exchanged nervous looks.
Others smiled, already imagining tomorrow's viral video.
Anna's heart pounded so loudly she could barely hear the whispers around her.
She thought about her grandmother.
She remembered the promise she had made...
Never reveal who you are.
No matter how difficult life became.
She slowly lowered her head.
Everyone believed she had surrendered.
Nobody noticed the elderly janitor standing near the entrance.
Nobody realized he had quietly pulled out an old flip phone.
Nobody heard him whisper only four words.
"They found Miss Carter."
