Chapter 16 - A New Horizon

By late summer, my professional life had reached a milestone I never could have imagined during the darkest days of the divorce. Arthur Sterling officially announced my promotion to junior partner at the firm, making my name part of the newly minted letterhead: Sterling & Vance Associates.
When Arthur handed me the partnership papers across his polished mahogany desk, he smiled warmly.
"You earned every line of this, Elena," he said. "And tell your son that if he ever wants a legal internship when he turns sixteen, my door is wide open—though heaven help opposing counsel if he's on the case."
I laughed, signing the documents with a steady hand. "I think he's leaning more toward artificial intelligence and cyber security, Arthur. But I'll let him know."
That evening, we celebrated with dinner at our favorite Italian restaurant downtown. The waiter brought out a small tiramisu with a single candle flickering on top, not for a birthday or an anniversary, but simply to mark a new beginning.
"Make a wish, Mom," Noah said, resting his chin in his hands.

I looked across the table at my brilliant, resilient son. I didn't need to wish for money, or status, or revenge. Everything I had ever fought for—everything that truly mattered—was sitting right in front of me, safe, thriving, and free.
"I don't need to wish for anything, sweetie," I smiled, blowing out the candle with a single breath. "We already have everything we need."
