Chapter 18 - Looking Forward

As the leaves turned amber and gold, our lives settled into a rhythm of utter stability and quiet joy.

I was thriving at the firm, managing complex corporate restructurings with a sharp, intuitive eye that earned the respect of senior judges and corporate titans alike. I no longer wore the invisible armor of the "discarded wife." I was Elena Vance—partner, professional, and survivor.

Noah’s twelfth birthday arrived in mid-October. We didn't throw a lavish party at an exclusive country club. We didn't invite distant relatives or corporate associates who only cared about social standing.

Instead, we drove out to the Texas hill country for a weekend of camping under the stars.

Around the crackling campfire, roasting marshmallows in the crisp night air, Noah looked up at the vast canopy of glittering stars overhead.

"Mom?"

"Yes, sweetie?"

"Do you think we'll ever move again?"

I looked around at the quiet wilderness, the towering pines, and the bright spark of the fire reflecting in my son's intelligent eyes. I reached out, pulling him close against my shoulder.

May you like

"Nowhere we aren't supposed to be," I answered softly.

Noah nodded, roasting his marshmallow a little closer to the flame. "Good. Because I really like it right here."
