Chapter 5 - The Aftermath and the New Beginning

The following week, the financial scandal broke across every major news outlet in Texas. Prominent Dallas Attorney Arrested at Lavish Wedding Amid Multi-Million Dollar Embezzlement Probe. The headlines were merciless, detailing not only Julian’s corporate crimes but also the spectacular collapse of his second marriage after just forty minutes of reception.
Victoria filed for an immediate annulment, citing fraud and misrepresentation, while Julian’s former law partners systematically dismantled his assets to repay the victims. The luxury apartment, the sports cars, the country club memberships—everything was seized by the federal receivership.
Back at our home, the atmosphere was lighter than it had been in years. The heavy, suffocating cloud of Julian’s shadow had finally lifted.
One evening, as we sat at the kitchen table eating takeout pizza, Noah looked up from his homework and stared thoughtfully out the window. The sun was setting, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold and amber.
"Mom?" Noah asked quietly.
"Yes, sweetie?"
"Are you mad at me? For doing that at the wedding?"
I set down my slice of pizza, walked over to his chair, and pulled him into a tight, fierce embrace. I rested my chin on the top of his head, feeling the steady, strong beat of his heart.
"Never," I whispered, blinking back tears of relief. "You protected us, Noah. But promise me one thing?"
He pulled back, looking up at me with his bright, intelligent eyes. "What?"
"No more federal investigations until you're at least in high school."
Noah actually laughed—a bright, genuine, carefree laugh that I hadn't heard in years.
"Deal, Mom."

Life didn't instantly become a fairy tale, but it became ours. We didn't need Julian’s late, condescending child support checks anymore. The forensic accountant who had helped Noah organize the files ended up offering me a position as his lead administrative manager, recognizing the sharp organizational skills that apparently ran in the family.
As for Julian, he spent his nights in a federal holding facility, staring at four gray walls, finally realizing the true cost of his "fresh start."
