Chapter 5 - THE SHADOWS OF THE ESTATETwo weeks later, the imposing iron gates of the Vance Manor swung open, welcoming back the true heir.

The estate had stood as a monument to cold luxury and isolation for decades. But as Daniel’s sleek black car rolled up the cobblestone driveway, the heavy oak double doors opened wide. A line of loyal household staff—many of whom had been fired or driven into silence by Victoria—stood waiting on the steps, their heads bowed in deep respect.

Elena walked beside Daniel, holding a wide-eyed baby Lily in her arms. The nightmare on the cliff felt like a lifetime ago, yet the physical and emotional scars remained fresh.

"Welcome home, Mr. and Mrs. Vance," the head housekeeper said, her voice thick with emotion as she handed Elena a bouquet of white lilies. "We have prepared the master suite. Everything is just as your father left it."

Daniel looked up at the towering pillars of the mansion where he had grown up, where his mother had suffered in silence, and where he had been branded a criminal and cast out into the cold streets.

"It’s not just a house anymore," Daniel murmured, squeezing Elena’s hand. "It’s a fortress. And no one will ever hurt this family inside these walls again."

That evening, sitting in his father’s private study overlooking the manicured gardens, Daniel opened an old mahogany desk drawer. Beneath a stack of yellowed tax ledgers sat a small, leather-bound journal with a gold-embossed monogram: E.V.

He flipped it open. It was his mother’s private diary, detailing every single day of her declining health during her marriage to Victoria’s husband, and the mounting evidence of Victoria slowly poisoning her food with heavy metals.

As Daniel ran his thumb over the faded ink, a knock sounded at the door.

Marcus stepped inside, closing the heavy wooden door carefully behind him. "Boss, we searched Victoria’s private safe at her downtown penthouse. We found the offshore accounts, the dummy corporations... and something else."

Marcus placed a bulky, encrypted flash drive and a thick, sealed Manila envelope onto the polished mahogany desk.

"What is it?" Daniel asked, his eyes narrowing.

"It’s not about Victoria," Marcus said, his tone unusually grave. "It’s about your father’s death five years ago. According to these encrypted communication logs, Victoria didn't act alone. She had a partner inside the inner circle—someone who signed off on the medical negligence while your father was in the hospital."

Daniel slowly picked up the envelope, pulling out a single sheet of paper. As his eyes scanned the signature at the bottom, the blood drained entirely from his face.
