Chapter 4 - THE ESCAPE INTO THE SHADOWS

"Get under the bed, Lily! Now!" Rachel barked, drawing her service weapon as the heavy glass door of Room 304 began to shatter in a controlled, silent explosion.

Glass cascaded across the floor without a loud crash—coated in an industrial adhesive designed for silent breaches. A heavy tactical boot kicked the remaining frame inward, sending splinters flying.

"Subject 02 is secured in this quadrant," a metallic, filtered voice echoed from behind the yellow respirator mask. "Neutralize any local law enforcement interference."

Rachel fired twice through the opening, the deafening cracks of her 9mm pistol shaking the small hospital room. The lead operative stumbled backward, absorbing the impact against heavy ceramic body armor, but immediately lunged forward with terrifying speed, wielding an electric stun baton that arced with blue plasma lightning.

Rachel ducked as the baton sheared through the wall partition, sending a shower of drywall sparks over her head. She lunged forward, sweeping the operative's legs with a brutal kick, sending him crashing into the IV pole.

"Lily, grab my hand!" Rachel screamed, dragging the terrified girl out from beneath the bed as Leo began to wail in panic.

She hoisted the feverish toddler into her arms with one hand, gripping Lily’s wrist with the other, and bolted through the shattered bathroom window connecting to the exterior fire escape.

Cold, freezing rain hammered them instantly as they burst onto the metal grate stairs descending into the hospital's back alley. Below them, a sleek, unmarked black van idled with its headlights off, its side doors sliding open to reveal rows of automated monitoring equipment humming with blue light.

"They're everywhere," Lily sobbed into Rachel’s shoulder, burying her face. "They took mom to the basement of the clinic. I saw it in her dream!"

Rachel didn't have time to process the child's words. A bright laser sight swept across the metal railing inches from her face, followed by the muffled thwip-thwip of suppressed submachine gun fire pinging off the iron beams.

They weren't just trying to recover the children. They were executing anyone who knew the truth.
