Chapter 5 - THE DISPATCHER’S REVELATION

Ten miles away, deep inside the subterranean levels of the Detroit Police Headquarters, Marcus Thorne sat locked inside the restricted IT vault. He had bypassed three layers of network security using his supervisor override key, driven by a gnawing, visceral intuition that the city’s entire infrastructure was being manipulated.

On his monitor, a decryption script was running at 98%. It was pulling fragments of audio data from the erased 911 dispatch logs.

Progress: 99%...

File Restored: Call_Log_0217_Backup.wav

Marcus hit play. The audio that spilled from his headphones wasn't just Lily’s voice. It was a three-way conference line that had been secretly bridged into the emergency dispatch system the moment Lily dialed.

A cold, clipped voice—sounding synthetic, like a text-to-speech algorithm—spoke to a terrified woman identified as Elena (Lily’s mother):

"Elena Vance, your extraction from apartment 4B has been compromised. If you attempt to flee with the subject, the biochemical inhibitor in your son's system will be activated remotely within twelve minutes. Surrender at the St. Jude facility immediately."

Elena’s voice crackled back through the phone, screaming over the sound of a roaring car engine: "You lied to me! You said it was a vaccine! You turned my baby into a weapon!"

"We didn't turn him into a weapon, Mrs. Vance," the synthetic voice replied smoothly. "We turned him into a receiver. And you are holding the master key."

The recording cut off with a violent screech of tires and a sickening metal impact.

Marcus slammed his fist against the desk. Elena Vance hadn't abandoned her children. She had run straight into a trap to draw the bio-agents away from apartment 4B, sacrificing herself to buy Lily and Leo precious time.

Suddenly, the red emergency lights inside the IT vault began to strobe. A high-pitched klaxon wailed as the heavy steel doors automatically slammed shut, locking from the outside.

On the main computer screen, every file related to St. Jude’s vanished in a cascade of automated deletion protocols. A single line of text flashed in glowing green letters across the dark monitor:

The air vents above his desk hissed, and a sweet, chemical vapor began to drift down into the room.
