Chapter 7 - THE BETRAYAL IN THE LAB

"Marcus?" Rachel shouted, leveling her service pistol as she kicked the heavy glass door open, stepping into the sterile laboratory with Lily shielding her flank. "What the hell is going on here? Step away from the console!"
Marcus didn't flinch. He slowly turned around, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. His expression wasn't panicked or guilty—it was completely, unnervingly calm.
"You took too long, Rachel," Marcus said quietly, his voice echoing in the vast chamber. "The biometric upload is already at eighty-five percent."
"You set us up? You were working for them all along?" Rachel's finger tightened on the trigger, her heart hammering against her ribs.
"I wasn't working for them, Rachel. I founded the oversight committee for this division five years ago before internal corruption locked me out of the mainframe," Marcus replied, walking toward her with his hands raised palms up to show he was unarmed. "The government didn't create these children, Officer Brooks. They engineered a synthetic neural network using human hosts as biological transmitters. Leo is the primary server. Lily is the fail-safe relay."
"Mom!" Lily shrieked, breaking away from Rachel and running toward the cylindrical glass chamber, pressing her small palms against the cold surface where Elena floated.
Elena’s eyes twitched. A faint, digitized voice echoed through the laboratory speakers, patched directly from her neural implant:
"Lily... run... they want the code..."
"The code isn't in her mind, Elena," Marcus said softly, looking at the glass tank with profound sorrow. "It's in her bloodline. And tonight, the network goes global."
Before Rachel could pull the trigger, heavy steel security shutters slammed down across the laboratory exits with a deafening crash. Red warning klaxons began to spin, bathing the room in a wash of crimson light.

From the ceiling vents above, a thick, pressurized cloud of white gas hissed downward, instantly filling the chamber.
Rachel felt her knees buckle. Her pistol slipped from her numb fingers, clattering against the metallic floor. As her vision began to blur into a swirling vortex of darkness, she saw Marcus turn back to the console, punching the final execution key as a chilling smile crossed his face.
