Chapter 3 - THE IMPOSTOR’S PARADOX"Don't move, Mr. Vance," the woman called out, her voice clear, steady, and entirely foreign. She dropped the bloodied executive of Damian’s extraction team into the puddle like a discarded sack of flour. "Unless you want the girl in the car to see her mother’s double get ventilated right here on the asphalt."

Damian’s hand finally dropped to the butt of his Sig Sauer, but he didn't draw. His analytical mind raced through the tactical variables faster than a supercomputer. The woman looked like Elena—the cheekbones, the slight curve of the nose—but the posture was wrong. Too rigid. Too military.

"Who are you?" Damian asked, his voice dropping an octave into a dangerous register.

"Name’s operative Vance—well, not by blood," she smirked, wiping a streak of mud from her cheek. "Let’s just call me an independent auditor of family secrets. Your father left a lot of loose ends when he died, Damian. Offshore accounts in the Caymans, shell companies in Zurich, and a biological lineage that wasn't supposed to survive the purge of '19."

From inside the Maybach, the door creaked open. Sophie didn't wait for permission. Clutching the old silver locket in her small, trembling hand, she stepped directly into the freezing downpour. Bear trotted heavily beside her, ignoring the armed men, his eyes locked entirely on the woman standing in the headlights.

"Mom?" Sophie whispered, the word cutting through the hum of the idling engines like glass.

The impostor’s facade cracked for a split second. A flicker of genuine human hesitation crossed her features before she hardened her expression. "I’m not your mother, kid. Your mother is currently five miles underground in a salt mine outside the city, and if you want to see her breathe again, your uncle is going to hand over the cryptographic keys to the Vance Global Trust."

Up on the gantry, Julian Reyes cursed loudly, pulling a suppressed sniper rifle from behind the railing. "She’s going off-script! Shoot her!"

Before Julian could acquire his target, a deafening roar shook the harbor.

From the dark waters of the slipway behind the warehouses, the searchlights of a Coast Guard cutter slammed into the alley, turning the night into blinding daylight. Megaphones crackled to life.

"Federal Police! Drop your weapons! You are surrounded!"

HOOK: The police didn't come from the city—they came from an encrypted distress signal sent automatically by Bear’s leather collar, revealing that the dog was actually a classified military asset.
