Chapter 4 - THE CANINE ASSETMarcus was the first to react, tackling Damian behind the reinforced door of the Maybach as a volley of suppressed submachine gun fire chewed up the asphalt where they had stood a second before.

"Boss! The dog!" Marcus yelled over the deafening rattle of gunfire. "Look at the collar!"
Damian glanced back through the shattered side window. Sophie was kneeling in the mud, shielding Bear with her own small body. But the massive dog wasn't whimpering. He had bitten down hard on a hidden toggle switch embedded inside the worn leather of his collar, twisting it three times to the left.
A small, high-pitched electronic chirp—indistinguishable from a standard emergency locator beacon—began pulsing from the metal clasp.
"Project Cerberus," Damian breathed, the memories of a decade-old military intelligence contract flooding back to him. His father hadn't just been a shipping tycoon; he had funded experimental biodefense programs for the Pentagon. Bear wasn't a stray mutt. He was a genetically enhanced tracker and communications relay, imprinted specifically to protect the Vance bloodline from assassination.
"Cease fire! Cease fire!" the impostor screamed, dropping her weapon as three heavily armored tactical squads from the Federal Bureau’s Special Response Unit swarmed the alley from all sides, subduing the kidnappers in seconds.
Julian Reyes leaped from the third-tier gantry down onto a canvas shipping tarp, rolling over the wet concrete and sprinting toward the perimeter fence, leaving his sniper rifle behind.
"Marcus, take the east gate. Don't let Julian reach the water," Damian ordered, his voice ice-cold as he stepped out of the bullet-riddled Maybach.
He walked slowly toward Sophie, who was still clutching Bear’s neck. The dog looked up at Damian, its tired brown eyes flashing with a strange, unnatural intelligence before closing heavily in exhaustion.
"He’s bleeding, Uncle Damian," Sophie said, her voice shaking for the first time. "They hurt him when they took us from the cabin."
Damian knelt down beside her, ignoring the mud soaking through his tailored trousers. He gently placed a hand on Bear’s massive, matted head. As his fingers brushed the collar, a small holographic projection flickered to life from the locket’s clasp, casting a glowing blue map onto the wet pavement.

It wasn't just a family photo inside the locket. It was a digital key leading to the exact coordinates of Elena Vance.
HOOK: The holographic map didn't point to a salt mine or an abandoned warehouse—it pointed to the private underground bunker directly beneath Damian’s own corporate headquarters.
