Chapter 7 - THE ARCHITECT OF THE BLOODLINEThe smoke cleared from the penthouse floor as the heavy oak doors drifted open. The room was bathed in the red glow of emergency strobes, casting long, dramatic shadows across the panoramic glass windows overlooking the stormy city skyline.

Sitting behind the massive mahogany desk wasn't a corpse in a mahogany box.

Arthur Vance—older, gaunt, his skin pale and lined with age, but breathing with slow, deliberate calm—poured himself a glass of single-malt scotch, swirling the amber liquid as he looked up at his surviving son.

"You always were a terrible shot with your left hand, Damian," Arthur said, his voice raspy but carrying that unmistakable, tyrannical authority that had ruled the underworld for four decades.

Damian lowered his pistol slowly, his mind struggling to process the visual reality before him. "You’re dead. We buried you. I saw the medical examiner’s report."

"Death is a very useful corporate strategy when the federal indictments start piling up," Arthur replied smoothly, taking a slow sip of his drink. "Sometimes a man needs to retire to a subterranean bunker to watch how his children handle the empire he built for them."

From the shadows behind the desk, Julian stepped out, wiping his hand clean of soot. "Your father orchestrated the whole thing, Damian. The fake kidnapping, the girl, the dog—everything. He needed to test whether you had the stomach to tear down the syndicate or if you’d let sentimentality destroy the family name."

Damian’s jaw tightened so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. "You put an 8-year-old child through hell just for a loyalty test?"

"I tested the heir," Arthur corrected coldly, slamming his glass onto the desk. "And you failed. You let sentiment, a stray dog, and a runaway daughter cloud your judgment. A Vance doesn't rescue strays, Damian. A Vance owns the pack."

Suddenly, the elevator bell chimed behind them.

The doors slid open, and Elena stepped onto the penthouse floor, pushing Sophie behind her, while Marcus covered their rear with his assault rifle raised.

Arthur’s eyes fixed on his daughter for the first time in twelve years. A chilling, cruel smile spread across his weathered face. "Ah, Elena. You always were the stubborn one. Come to watch the dynasty burn?"

HOOK: Elena didn't flinch; instead, she reached into her pocket, pulled out a small tactical detonator, and pressed the activation button, revealing that she had wired the entire tower’s structural columns before they even left the vault.
