Chapter 1 - The Silence Before the Storm

The sharp sound of Claire’s fall echoed through the grand ballroom, instantly cutting through the low murmur of the guests. Music ground to a halt, and champagne glasses slipped from frozen fingers, shattering against the floor.

For a terrifying second, the room was suspended in absolute, breathless silence.

Then, chaos erupted.

"Claire!"

A horrified roar tore from Julian Sterling’s throat. Dropping the glass he had been holding, he bolted across the polished marble floor. He didn't care about the gasps of the city’s elite, nor the flashing cameras of hidden reporters. He dropped to his knees beside his wife, his hands hovering frantically over her motionless body, terrified to touch her for fear of causing more damage.

Claire lay crumpled at the foot of the grand staircase, a pool of crimson silk spreading ominously beneath her pale form. Her eyes were closed, her breathing shallow and ragged.

"Somebody call an ambulance! Now!" Julian bellowed, his voice cracking with raw panic as he scooped her head into his lap. He looked up, his eyes blazing with a terrifying, murderous fury that made the nearest guests shrink back.

Across the room, standing at the top of the staircase with her hands still half-raised from the shove, was Victoria. Her chest heaved, her breath coming in short gasps. For a fleeting second, triumph flickered in her eyes, quickly masked by a theatrical mask of horror.

"Oh... oh my god," Victoria whimpered, pressing trembling fingers to her mouth. She half-stumbled down a few steps, playing the grieving, panicked sister. "She... she tripped! I tried to catch her! I swear I tried to grab her dress, but she lost her footing!"

Julian’s head whipped up. His gaze locked onto his sister, and the look in his eyes was so devoid of human warmth that Victoria actually froze mid-step.

"You lying bitch," Julian whispered, the words carrying across the dead-silent ballroom with lethal clarity. "I saw you. Everyone saw you."

"Julian, no! You're in shock, you don't know what you're saying—" Victoria began to wail, trying to rally the sympathy of the crowd. But the patriarch of the family, Arthur Sterling, stepped forward, his cane slamming against the marble with a deafening thud.

"Silence," Arthur commanded, his face like thunder. But even as he spoke, his eyes darted nervously toward the security cameras mounted in the corners of the ceiling.

Before the paramedics could burst through the mahogany double doors, Julian leaned down, pressing his lips to Claire's cold forehead. "Hold on," he choked out, a tear finally escaping his eye. "Don't you dare leave me. If you and our baby don't make it... I will burn this entire dynasty to ash."
