Chapter 2 - The Hospital Waiting Room and the First Betrayal

The sterile, white-hot fluorescent lights of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital felt like an interrogation room.

Julian paced the length of the private VIP waiting suite like a caged animal. His pristine tuxedo was stained with Claire’s blood—a permanent, vivid reminder of the moment his world fractured. Every time the heavy swinging doors of the emergency ward opened, he flinched, his heart hammering against his ribs.

Dr. Marcus, the chief of obstetrics, finally stepped through the doors, looking grim.

Julian was in front of her in a fraction of a second, grabbing her shoulders. "Is she alive? My baby? Tell me they’re alive!"

"Mr. Sterling, please, calm down," Dr. Marcus said softly, though her eyes betrayed the gravity of the situation. "Mrs. Sterling suffered severe trauma. We had to perform an emergency cesarean section to save the baby. The infant is premature—just seven months—and is currently in the neonatal intensive care unit fighting for every breath."

Julian let out a ragged breath, a mix of relief and terror. "And Claire?"

"She lost an immense amount of blood. She is currently in a medically induced coma. The next forty-eight hours are critical. We don't know yet if she will suffer permanent neurological damage, or if..." Dr. Marcus hesitated. "Prepare yourself, Mr. Sterling. It is touch and go."

Julian stepped back, his knees nearly buckling. He gripped the back of a leather sofa to steady himself. Victoria did this. The thought wasn't a suspicion anymore; it was a blood oath.

Just then, the private elevator pinged. Arthur Sterling stepped out, flanked by his legal counsel, Richard Vance. Victoria trailed closely behind them, wearing a black trench coat, looking every bit the tragic, misunderstood victim.

"Julian, my boy," Arthur said, opening his arms. "How is she? How is my grandchild?"

Julian didn't move. He stood like a monolith of ice. He stared past his father and locked his eyes onto Victoria, who instinctively shrank half an inch behind Arthur’s shoulder.

"She’s fighting for her life," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "And the baby is fighting for air in an incubator. Because of her."

"Julian, watch your tone," Arthur snapped, his paternal warmth vanishing instantly behind corporate coldness. "Accusing your sister of intentional harm in a public setting—or even within these walls—is a liability. Richard has already spoken to the hospital administration. The official narrative is a tragic accident. A pregnant woman dizzy from vertigo, losing her balance on a marble staircase."

Julian’s head snapped toward his father in absolute disbelief. "An accident? Dad, half the city’s elite were in that ballroom! They saw Victoria shove her!"

"Nobody saw anything except a panicked sister trying to save a falling relative," Richard Vance chimed in smoothly, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. "Furthermore, Mr. Sterling, as major shareholders of Sterling Enterprises, we must protect the stock price. A public scandal involving an attempted murder charge within the family will wipe out three billion dollars in market capitalization by tomorrow morning."

Victoria peeked out from behind Arthur, her voice dripping with crocodile tears. "Julian, how could you think I'd ever hurt a baby? I was just trying to talk to her... she was so clumsy all evening..."

Julian stared at his family—the people who had raised him, the empire he had helped build—and realized with absolute clarity that he was entirely alone. They weren't a family. They were a crime syndicate wearing tailored suits.

"Get out," Julian whispered.

"Excuse me?" Arthur raised an eyebrow.

"Get the hell out of my sight," Julian roared, lunging forward with such velocity that Arthur’s bodyguards instinctively drew their weapons. "If Claire dies, I swear to God, I won't just destroy the stock price. I will dismantle this family piece by piece, starting with you, Victoria."
