Chapter 10 - The Shadow of the Past

The morning sun filtered through the reinforced glass of Costa Manor, casting sharp geometric patterns across the hardwood floors of Gabriel’s private study. Brutus lay stretched out before the hearth, his massive gray head resting on his paws, letting out deep, rhythmic snores that vibrated through the room.
Chloe sat across from Gabriel at the heavy mahogany desk, her fingers tapping rhythmically against a leather-bound veterinary ledger. She was wearing her crisp new blue scrubs, the platinum ring with its subtle chain engraving catching the morning light every time she moved her hand.
"Rostova’s remnants are scattering across Indiana and Wisconsin," Gabriel said, sliding a thick manila folder across the desk. "Marcus is talking. Every name, every shadow account, every bribe paid to local politicians over the last decade is being handed over to federal prosecutors."
Chloe opened the folder, her slate-gray eyes scanning the dense columns of names and shell corporations. "And what about you, Gabriel? You're still sitting on top of half of Chicago's commercial infrastructure. Does cleaning house mean you're stepping down, or just changing the brand?"
Gabriel leaned back in his leather chair, his dark eyes studying her with intense, unblinking focus. "I built this empire to protect my family, Chloe. But a man can't build a future while looking backward through a gun barrel. Once the transition with the federal task force is finalized, the legitimate logistics side goes public under Elena’s direct management."
"And the other side?" Chloe asked, her voice dropping into a quiet challenge. "The part that requires armed men standing outside my clinic doors?"
Before Gabriel could answer, a sharp, urgent chime sounded from the security console on the wall. Dante stepped into the study without knocking, his face pale and tight.
"Boss," Dante said, his voice dropping an octave. "We have an issue at the North Side port terminal. A container ship just docked from Marseilles. The cargo manifest was completely cleared by federal customs, but our internal dock sensors picked up an unprogrammed heavy freight container."
Gabriel stood up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the oak floor. "Whose seal is on the container?"
"That's the problem," Dante swallowed hard. "It's not Rostova. And it's not the Bratva. It bears the crest of the European syndicate—the inner council in Palermo. They didn't send a hit squad this time, boss. They sent a message."
Chloe stood up, her heart skipping a beat as she looked between Dante and Gabriel. "What kind of message?"

Gabriel’s face went completely, terrifyingly cold. The mafia boss who had ruled Chicago with an iron fist for a decade was suddenly staring at a ghost from a past he thought he had buried forever.
"My father's personal insignia," Gabriel whispered, his voice dangerously low. "The council thinks I’ve gone soft because of a veterinary technician and a pit bull. They’re here to take back the throne."
