Chapter 9 - The New RegimeTwo months later, the West Side Animal Emergency clinic looked entirely different.

The shattered windows had been replaced with bulletproof reinforced glass. State-of-the-art surgical suites had been installed, funded by an anonymous, multi-million-dollar philanthropic endowment managed by a shell corporation bearing Elena Costa’s initials.

Dr. Reynolds was now the proud owner of a brand-new Mercedes parked out front, whistling happily as he reviewed inventory sheets.

Inside, Chloe stood at the front desk, wearing a crisp new set of blue scrubs, smiling as a little boy checked in his golden retriever with an ear infection.

The heavy glass front doors swung open.

A massive, gray pit bull trotted in proudly, his scar barely visible beneath a healthy, gleaming coat. Trotting right beside him was a tall, sharply dressed man in a bespoke charcoal suit who turned heads the second he stepped through the threshold.

Gabriel walked up to the front desk, leaning his forearms casually against the laminate counter, exactly where he had stood the night they first met.

"How's my dog?" Gabriel asked, a slow, dangerous smile playing at the corners of his lips.

Chloe leaned across the counter, resting her chin in her hands, her eyes sparkling with quiet defiance and undeniable warmth.

"He's healthy, spoiled rotten, and listens better than his owner," Chloe replied sweetly.

Gabriel reached across the counter, sliding a small, heavy velvet box right past the inventory logs and stopping it against her knuckles.

"What's this?" she asked, her breath catching slightly.

"Interest," Gabriel said smoothly, his dark eyes locked onto hers with absolute devotion. "Open it."

Chloe popped the brass latch. Inside rested a heavy, custom platinum ring, beautifully engraved around the band with miniature links of heavy chain—and shaped subtly like a veterinarian’s clasp.

"You really don't know how to take 'No' for an answer, do you?" she whispered.

"Never learned," Gabriel replied, his voice a low, gravelly promise that echoed through the quiet clinic. "Now, close the clinic early. My dog wants to go home, and so do you."

Chloe looked at the ring, looked down at Brutus leaning happily against her boots, and finally looked up into the dark eyes of the man who had rewritten every rule he lived by just to keep her.
