Chapter 11 - The Inheritance of BloodThe private convoy of armored black SUVs screamed down the Kennedy Expressway toward the Port of Chicago, cutting through morning traffic with military precision.

In the backseat, Gabriel sat in tense silence, his thumb rubbing absently over the silver signet ring on his right hand. Chloe sat beside him, her fingers laced tightly with his. The warmth of her hand was the only anchor holding back the cold, calculated fury simmering beneath his exterior.
"You don't have to come into the yards with me," Gabriel said, his voice softening just a fraction as he looked down at her. "This isn't a street fight with local enforcers, Chloe. This is old-world politics. The council plays dirty, and they don't care who gets caught in the crossfire."
"Let's get one thing straight, Gabriel Costa," Chloe turned her head, her slate-gray eyes flashing with fierce determination. "I saved your dog, I outsmarted your hit squad with an oxygen tank, and I survived your dinner table while being shot at. If you think I'm staying behind in a safe house while a bunch of old-world mobsters try to overthrow my fiancé, you clearly haven't been paying attention."
A slow, reluctant smile touched the corners of Gabriel’s mouth. He squeezed her hand tightly. "God help anyone who ever tries to cross you."
The SUVs slid to a violent halt on the wet asphalt of Terminal 4. Massive shipping cranes loomed overhead against the gray Chicago sky, casting long shadows over a single, unmarked twenty-foot steel container sitting directly in the center of the pier.
Twelve heavily armed guards surrounded the container, their weapons drawn, waiting for their boss.
Gabriel stepped out of the vehicle first, his long charcoal coat snapping in the lake wind. Chloe stepped out right beside him, her canvas medical bag slung over her shoulder.
Waiting fifty yards away by a stack of wooden crates was an elderly man in a bespoke navy cashmere coat. He leaned heavily on an ivory-handled cane, silver hair brushed back from a face carved from ancient stone.
"Luca Moretti," Gabriel muttered under his breath, recognizing the head of the European council.
Moretti stepped forward, his dark, calculating eyes sweeping over Gabriel before landing with icy curiosity on Chloe.
"Gabriel," Moretti’s voice echoed across the empty pier, raspy and carrying an unmistakable weight of absolute authority. "I see the rumors are true. The young lion of Chicago has traded his claws for a domestic pet and a stray veterinary nurse."

Gabriel’s posture stiffened into an apex predator ready to strike. "Moretti. You crossed the Atlantic without an invitation. In my city, that’s considered a death wish."
"Is it?" Moretti smiled thinly, gesturing toward the massive steel container behind him. "Let’s see how brave you are when you open the box."
