Chapter 13 - The True Identity of Chloe HarperThe wind whipped across the shipping pier as Gabriel stared at the small, military-grade satellite device in Chloe’s hand. The flashing green encryption light indicated a secure, direct link to the Department of Justice’s federal strike force command.

"Who are you?" Gabriel demanded, his hand instinctively dropping toward the concealed holster beneath his coat. The realization hit him like a physical blow—every coincidence, every stormy night, every moment they had crossed paths wasn't an accident at all.
"My name is Chloe Harper Vance," she said quietly, her slate-gray eyes locking onto his with absolute, unyielding intensity. "My father wasn't just a small-town mechanic, and my mother wasn't just an ordinary woman living in Rockford. My father was Special Agent James Vance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Organized Crime Task Force. He spent twelve years infiltrating the European council before he was murdered by Luca Moretti’s men."
Gabriel’s breath caught in his throat. The world he thought he understood—the fragile balance between his mafia empire and his growing love for the fierce young veterinary technician—shattered into a thousand pieces.
"You were an undercover federal operative all along," Gabriel whispered, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. "You didn't just happen to be working at the West Side Animal Emergency clinic when Brutus got shot. You were tracking Moretti’s distribution routes."
"At first, yes," Chloe admitted, her voice trembling slightly, though she refused to look away from his piercing gaze. "I tracked Moretti’s money laundering through veterinary supply fronts on the West Side. I knew your dog was shot because Moretti’s hit squad was testing a new consignment of modified weapons on local targets. When Brutus was wounded, I followed the blood trail straight to your clinic because I needed to get inside your orbit."
Gabriel stepped back, his face hardening into an impenetrable wall of ice and profound betrayal. "So it was all a lie. The blood on your scrubs, the emergency surgery, the way you stood up to me... it was all part of a federal sting."
"No!" Chloe grabbed his arm, her eyes filling with hot, angry tears. "Not all of it, Gabriel! I didn't plan on falling in love with an arrogant, impossible mafia boss who treats his pit bull better than most people treat their families! I didn't plan on watching you risk your life to protect me from Rostova!"
Gabriel looked down at her hand on his arm, then slowly, deliberately, pulled his arm away. The warmth in his dark eyes was entirely gone, replaced by the chilling, impassive mask of a man who had just been betrayed by the only person he had ever truly trusted.
"You played me, Chloe," Gabriel said, his voice dangerously low. "You used my dog as a tactical entry point into my life. And for what? To hand me over to your federal handlers?"
"To stop Moretti!" she shouted over the wind. "To dismantle the entire syndicate—yours and his! But I wanted to do it without you ending up in a federal penitentiary or a pine box!"
Before Gabriel could answer, the roar of approaching sirens split the air. Three federal tactical vans, sirens wailing and lights flashing, swarmed the pier from all directions, cutting off the exits.
Dante drew his weapon, stepping in front of Gabriel. "Boss! Federal agents! We're surrounded!"
Gabriel didn't draw his gun. He simply stood there, staring at Chloe with a look of such profound, crushing disappointment that it hurt worse than any bullet.
"You called them," Gabriel said flatly.
"I had to," Chloe whispered, wiping a tear from her cheek. "Moretti declared war today. If I didn't bring the federal task force in right now, Moretti’s men would have killed you and everyone at the estate before sunset."
Federal agents in black tactical gear poured from the vans, rifles raised, shouting orders as they swarmed the pier.
"Gabriel Costa! Put your hands behind your back!" a voice barked through a megaphone.
Gabriel didn't move an inch. His eyes remained locked on Chloe until the federal agents rushed in, tackling his guards and forcing him down against the hood of the SUV, slapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

As they dragged him toward a federal transport van, Gabriel didn't struggle. He just looked at her one last time, his voice cutting through the chaos with devastating finality.
"You said you were mine, Chloe," Gabriel whispered as they pushed him inside. "Turns out, you belonged to the badge all along."
