Chapter 1 - The Liquid in the Brown BottleDr. Raymond Warren’s fingers were cold, perfectly steady, and entirely deceptive.

For three years, Adrian Vale had accepted those fingers inside his ears without a second thought. He had trusted the silver-haired physician because trust was currency in the syndicate—and Warren was a vault that had never leaked.

Until today.

Until four-year-old Lily Parker’s tiny hands had pulled away from Adrian’s left ear, her bright brown eyes wide with a mixture of confusion and terror, signing Something inside your ear.

Adrian sat on the examination table in the private medical suite, his gaze fixed on Warren. The older man was holding the familiar brown glass dropper bottle, the exact same one he produced every single Friday at 7:00 a.m.

"Let's check the left side first, Adrian," Warren said, his lips moving with practiced, smooth articulation.

Adrian did not move. He kept his massive frame completely relaxed, the posture of a predator who had just caught the scent of an intruder. He held out his right hand, flat and open.

Warren smiled faintly, a patronizing curve of his lips. "Still feeling that stiffness? The inflammation from the blast scar tissue usually flares up before a weather change."

Adrian watched him closely. He didn't blink.

Warren stepped closer, the rubber bulb of the dropper squeezed tight, ready to draw up the viscous, clear liquid.

In a movement so fast it blurred the air, Adrian’s hand shot out. His iron fingers clamped around Warren’s wrist with the force of a hydraulic press.

The glass dropper slipped from Warren’s fingers, shattering against the tiled floor. The clear liquid splashed across the white porcelain, instantly eating away at the grout with a faint, sizzling hiss.

Warren’s polite smile vanished. His face drained of color, turning the gray shade of wet ash.

"Adrian," Warren choked out, his voice pitching high with sudden panic. "What—what is the meaning of this? Your hand is crushing my radius—"

Adrian did not blink. He leaned forward, towering over the physician. With his left hand, he reached into his pocket, pulled out a small silver pen knife, and flicked the blade open with a sharp clack.

He grabbed a wad of medical gauze from the tray, pressed it hard against the puddle of spilled liquid on the floor, and then, with terrifying calmness, pressed the soaked gauze against Warren’s own lips.

"Taste it," Adrian’s voice didn't boom; it was a low, gravelly vibration that shook the room. He hadn't spoken aloud in three years, and the sound of his own voice felt like grinding stone. "Or I will pour the rest down your throat."

Warren whimpered, thrashing wildly against Adrian’s grip, but he was trapped in a vice.
