Chapter 6 - The Cleansing FireBy noon, the Long Island estate looked less like a home and more like a crime scene command center.

Federal agents in windbreakers walked the corridors, carting away filing cabinets, hard drives, and medical logs. Dr. Raymond Warren was hauled out through the front entrance in handcuffs, a black jacket thrown over his head to block the flashing cameras of reporters who had already swarmed the gates.

Daniel Mercer was led away in the back of a black SUV, his career, his wealth, and his freedom reduced to a pair of steel bracelets.

Adrian stood on the back patio, staring out at the sparkling blue water of the indoor pool where his morning had begun.

The world sounded loud.

Sometimes, too loud. The distant hum of helicopters overhead, the crunch of gravel under the federal agents' boots, the murmur of voices across the lawn—it was an overwhelming tidal wave of sound that he had spent three years learning to live without.

He closed his eyes, focusing on breathing in and out.

Footsteps approached behind him. Soft, hesitant steps.

He turned.

Hannah Parker stood at the edge of the patio, holding little Lily's hand. Lily was hiding half behind her mother’s skirt, clutching a new box of crayons.

Adrian walked over to them. He knelt down so he was eye-level with the little girl.

Lily looked up at him nervously, her small fingers twitching as she remembered the sign language she had used that morning.

Friend? she signed slowly, her hands trembling a little.

Adrian smiled—a real, genuine smile that reached his dark eyes for the first time in three years.

He raised his own hands, signing back to her with clumsy but deliberate movements:

Best friend.

Lily gasped, her face lighting up with a gap-toothed grin, and threw her arms around his neck, hugging him tightly.

Hannah wiped a tear from her cheek, bowing her head slightly. "Mr. Vale... I don't know what happens to this estate now. What happens to us?"

"You aren't housekeepers anymore, Hannah," Adrian said, his voice deep and warm. "Unless you want to be. But starting today, you and Lily own the west wing. And the foundation my brother left behind? It's going to fund Lily's education through any university she wants."

Hannah stared at him, speechless, before whispering, "Thank you, sir."

"Call me Adrian," he said.
