Chapter 2 - THE WAR ROOM AND THE SECRET TRUST

I immediately picked up my phone and dialed Marcus Vance—my late father’s younger brother and the only person in our extended family who had seen through Beverly’s ruthless, narcissistic personality decades ago. Marcus was a former federal prosecutor turned elite corporate defense attorney in downtown Phoenix.

Within an hour, I was sitting in Marcus’s high-rise corner office, drinking black coffee while he flipped through the eviction notice and the financial records I had printed out.

"Your mother has crossed a line that isn't just cruel, Laura," Marcus said, his voice dripping with icy gravity. "It’s blatantly illegal."

"She owns the LLC, Marcus," I said, rubbing my tired eyes. "She’s listed as the legal owner of my condo. How do I fight an eviction when she holds the title?"

Marcus leaned back in his leather chair, a subtle, cold smile spreading across his lips. "She holds the title to the condo, yes. But do you know where she got the money for the down payment of that LLC four years ago?"

I paused. "She claimed it was from her personal savings."

"Beverly hasn't had personal savings since 2015," Marcus said, pulling a heavy black binder off the shelf behind him. "When your grandfather passed away, he established the Vance Family Heritage Trust. It was meant to be divided equally among you, Joanna, and your cousins once you turned thirty-five. Beverly was named the sole trustee with strict fiduciary duties. She was supposed to manage those funds strictly for educational, housing, and medical care for the grandkids—including Maisie."

Marcus slapped the binder down on the glass coffee table.

"Over the last eight years, Beverly has been systematically draining that trust to fund her lifestyle, Joanna’s failed business ventures, and that luxury car loan you were paying off. She didn't buy that condo with her money, Laura. She bought it using funds stolen directly from a trust set up for you and Maisie."

My breath caught in my throat. "She stole from her own granddaughter's inheritance?"

"She embezzled it," Marcus corrected sharply. "And by using trust money to purchase an asset under a private LLC, and then charging you rent on an asset bought with your future money, she committed grand larceny and fraud."

Marcus leaned forward, tapping his desk. "We could just fight the eviction, but that's playing small. If you want to protect Maisie permanently and cut these parasites out of your life forever, we don't just defend. We declare total war. We file an emergency injunction to freeze every single asset connected to Beverly and Joanna, strip her of her status as trustee, and file a criminal report for financial fraud."

I thought of Maisie sobbing on the couch, trembling before two armed police officers because my mother wanted to assert her dominance. I thought of my sister laughing while her child mimicked tears.

"Do it," I said, my voice turning to steel. "Take everything."
