Chapter 3 - THE AMBUSH AT THE COUNTRY CLUB

Instead of waiting for the court date, Beverly and Joanna decided to double down on their public humiliation campaign. They knew I was scheduled to attend the annual Phoenix Commerce Gala at the Paradise Valley Country Club—an event where my firm’s top executive clients and regional partners gathered.
I arrived in a sleek, tailored emerald dress, determined to maintain my professional composure despite the storm brewing around me. But as I stepped into the grand ballroom, the chatter in the room suddenly died down.
Standing near the main champagne fountain were Beverly and Joanna, surrounded by several prominent local socialites and board members. Joanna was dabbing her eyes with a silk napkin, while Beverly was speaking in a loud, sorrowful voice that carried across the room.
"...we just don't know what happened to her," Beverly was saying, her voice thick with fake grief. "Ever since her divorce, Laura has become so unstable. She abandons her daughter for business trips, leaves the poor girl with us, and then calls the police on her own family! And now... she’s completely cut off her elderly mother's medical care out of spite!"
Joanna gasped softly, adding, "She even refused to pay for my little Harper’s special therapy sessions! She told us she wished we were all dead!"
Gasps echoed through the circle of high-society women. People were staring at me, pointing, whispering behind their hands. They were attempting to execute a complete character assassination to ruin my career, knowing that a reputation scandal could cost me my senior partner track at the firm.
I took a deep breath, straightened my spine, and walked directly into the center of the crowd.
"Good evening, Mother. Joanna," I said, my voice calm, smooth, and echoing clearly through the silenced hall.
Beverly gasped exaggeratedly, stepping back as if terrified. "Laura! Please, don't cause a scene here! We only want you to get help!"
"Help?" I pulled my phone from my evening clutch. "Is that why you filed an emergency eviction notice on your five-year-old granddaughter yesterday? Because you wanted me to get help?"
The room went dead silent. The socialites surrounding us exchanged alarmed looks.
"What are you talking about?" Joanna sputtered, her face flushing red. "You haven't paid rent in months!"
"I have paid $3,500 directly into your private account every single month for four years, Joanna," I replied loudly, pulling up my mobile banking app and holding the screen out for the nearest board members to see. "And on top of that, I was giving you and Beverly $18,000 a month to cover your luxury cars, country club dues, and designer clothes. But the moment I stopped funding your parasites' lifestyle because you called the police on my terrified child to scare her into giving up a toy—you decided to try and throw us onto the street."
"That is a lie!" Beverly shrieked, her composure cracking. "You are an ungrateful, malicious brat! I raised you!"
"No, Beverly," I said, dropping the title 'Mom' entirely. "You used me. But it ends tonight."
At that exact moment, the grand wooden doors of the ballroom swung open. Two uniformed process servers, accompanied by Marcus Vance and two plainclothes forensic investigators from the state Attorney General’s office, walked straight into the ballroom.

"Beverly Vance? Joanna Vance?" the lead process server announced loudly, his voice booming across the silent hall. "You are officially served with an emergency freezing order from the Maricopa County Superior Court. All assets, bank accounts, and properties under Arcadia Heights Holding LLC and the Vance Family Heritage Trust have been frozen pending an emergency forensic audit for felony embezzlement."
Beverly’s face turned from red to an ash-white pale. "What... what did you say?"
