Chapter 7 - THE CRUMBLING OF THE PARASITES

Judge Pendelton adjusted his glasses and began reading his ruling, each word striking like a sledgehammer against Beverly and Joanna.

"First," the judge declared, "the eviction action against Laura Vance is DISMISSED WITH PREJUDICE. Arcadia Heights Holding LLC is hereby placed into court-ordered receivership."

Beverly let out a strangled gasp.

"Second," the judge continued, "Beverly Vance is immediately REMOVED as trustee of the Vance Family Heritage Trust due to severe breach of fiduciary duty and grand larceny. Marcus Vance is appointed as permanent independent trustee. All assets previously purchased using trust funds—including the condo unit, Beverly’s residential home, and vehicles—are hereby transferred into a protected trust fund held exclusively for the benefit of Laura Vance and Maisie Vance."

"No! You can't take my house!" Beverly shrieked, tears smearing her heavy makeup. "Where am I supposed to live?!"

"You should worry less about where you are going to live, Mrs. Vance, and more about what you are going to wear in state prison," Judge Pendelton said with cold finality. "Third, based on the evidence of financial fraud, forgery, and the malicious misuse of emergency services and DCS reporting, this court is referring Beverly Vance and Joanna Vance to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for formal criminal prosecution."

"Please! Your Honor, have mercy!" Joanna sobbed, falling to her knees beside the defense table. "I have a daughter! I have four-year-old Harper!"

"You should have thought about your daughter before you used emergency law enforcement and CPS as weapons to abuse your five-year-old niece," Judge Pendelton snapped. "Bailiff, take these two into temporary custody pending the formal filing of criminal charges!"

Two armed court officers stepped forward, pulling Beverly and Joanna to their feet and clicking handcuffs around their wrists.

As they were led away in chains, Beverly turned her head toward me, her eyes bloodshot, her face distorted by panic and fury. "Laura! Tell them it’s a mistake! Tell them to stop! You’re my daughter! You can't let them lock me up!"

I stood beside Marcus, looking at the woman who had spent my entire life leeching off my hard work, manipulating my feelings, and terrifying my child.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry. I simply looked her dead in the eye and said six words:

"You said it yourself, Beverly. Maybe that’s how you’ll learn."
