Chapter 4 - THE UNRAVELING OF THE EMPIRE

The scene in the country club ballroom erupted into utter chaos. Socialites pulled out their phones, snapping photos and recording videos as the process servers handed thick stacks of legal documents to my mother and sister.
"You can't do this!" Joanna screamed, dropping her glass of champagne, which shattered loudly across the marble floor. "This is a private family matter! Get these people out of here!"
"It ceased to be a private family matter the moment you committed federal bank fraud, legal misconduct, and child endangerment," Marcus Vance said smoothly, stepping into the center of the room. "As the court-appointed temporary administrator of the Vance Trust, I have already secured an order blocking access to all trust funds. Your credit cards have been canceled as of ten minutes ago."
Beverly reached into her designer handbag, frantically pulling out her black American Express card to check her phone notifications. A second later, a loud chime echoed from her phone—a notification from the bank informing her that her lines of credit had been frozen due to suspected fraudulent activity.
"Laura, you monster!" Beverly shrieked, lunging toward me with her manicured nails clawing at the air. "I am your mother! You wouldn't even have a career if it wasn't for me! You owe me everything!"
Before she could reach me, security officers at the country club stepped in, forcefully restraining her. The very elite society members she had been trying to manipulate just minutes ago backed away in disgust, pulling out their phones to record her unhinged meltdown.
"Get her out of here," the general manager of the country club ordered sternly. "Beverly, your membership is officially suspended pending an investigation. Leave the premises immediately."
As the security guards escorted Beverly and a hysterically sobbing Joanna out of the venue, Joanna turned back, her eyes filled with pure hatred. "You think you won, Laura?! You think this is over?! We will destroy you! We will take Maisie away from you forever! We already filed a report with Child Protective Services!"

My blood ran cold. The ambient noise of the country club vanished. I stared at my sister as she was dragged out the glass doors.
They hadn't just filed a fake police report. They had involved Child Protective Services.
