Chapter 8 - THE ESCAPEI didn't run away. I ran to the basement vault, where the emergency communications were located. I sent the files—the entire logbook, the bank accounts, the photos—to every major news outlet and the Department of Justice.

Then, I grabbed the heavy-duty shotgun Ricardo kept in the emergency locker. I wasn't a soldier, but I was a woman who had buried a husband, and I was done watching the world break the things I loved.
I burst back into the foyer, gun leveled.
I fought like a woman possessed, my movements driven by the grief I had been holding for two years. Nero joined me, a black blur of teeth and muscle. We fought our way back to Ricardo.
