Chapter 1 - THE BLOOD-RED EMBERS OF BETRAYAL

The silence in the black-marble parlor stretched until it became a physical weight. Outside, the Westchester rain lashed against the bulletproof glass, mimicking the storm brewing inside the De Luca estate.

Alessio De Luca stood up from the leather sofa. At six-foot-three, he towered over everyone, a silhouette of absolute authority. The small, crooked red heart Lily had drawn on his cheek remained untouched—a bizarre, striking contrast to the lethal coldness in his dark eyes.

"Take off the glove, Gideon," Alessio repeated, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper that made the guards subconsciously reach for their holsters.

Gideon Vale, the man who had managed the De Luca estate for fifteen years, the man who had held Alessio’s crying son after the car crash that claimed Clara De Luca’s life, maintained his perfect posture. His gray-gloved hands remained folded neatly.

"Sir, with all due respect, I injured my hand during the inventory check this morning," Gideon said, his tone smooth, almost paternal. "A shattered glass bottle of imported French vintage. It isn't a pleasant sight for the child."

"Mara," Alessio said, not looking at her. "Take Lily to the kitchen."

Mara didn’t need to be told twice. She scooped Lily into her arms, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. But as she turned, Lily’s small hands clung to her shoulder, her wide blue eyes fixed on Gideon’s hands.

"But Mommy," Lily whispered, her innocent voice cutting through the suffocating tension, "the gray gloves smell like the pretty pink bottle in the greenhouse. The one that smells like roses, but makes the birds sleepy."

Gideon’s left eyelid twitched. It was a microscopic movement, but to Alessio, it was a confession.

"Out. Now," Alessio ordered the women.

The heavy mahogany doors slammed shut behind Mara and Lily. The moment the latch clicked, Alessio moved. He didn't draw a weapon; he used his bare hands. In a flash of terrifying speed, he crossed the room, grabbed Gideon by the throat, and slammed him against the solid oak mantelpiece.

A silver-framed photograph of Clara rattled and fell, the glass shattering on the hearth.

"The glove," Alessio growled, his grip tightening until Gideon’s face turned a dangerous shade of purple. "Or I will take the hand off at the wrist."

With a trembling, ungloved left hand, Gideon reached up and pulled the gray leather off his right hand.

The guards gasped. The lawyer by the window dropped her pen.

Gideon’s right hand wasn't bloody from broken glass. The skin was perfectly intact, but stained with a deep, chemical yellow-brown residue around the fingernails—the undeniable mark of handling concentrated Cyanide-B, a rare, odorless toxin that, when mixed with a synthetic rose essential oil, became a delayed-action contact poison.

The exact poison found in Clara De Luca’s system four years ago. The poison the police had blamed on a rogue rival family.

"Four years," Alessio whispered, his chest heaving as a devastating realization washed over him. "Four years I mourned her, thinking it was the Moretti syndicate. I hunted them down. I killed their sons. And the snake was pouring my coffee every morning."

Gideon choked out a breathless, mocking laugh. "You... you always were a blunt instrument, Alessio. A brute with a crown. Clara... Clara deserved someone with vision."

"Who paid you?" Alessio roared, slamming him again.

"Look closer to home, Boss," Gideon wheezed, his eyes darting toward the security camera that Lily had pointed out—the one that wasn't supposed to be active, the one that was secretly broadcasting a live feed to an encrypted external server.

Suddenly, the lights in the estate went pitch black.

The backup generators didn't kick in. The electronic locks on the doors clicked, sealing them from the outside.

From the dark corners of the mansion, the heavy thud of tactical boots echoed. The estate was under siege, and the enemy was already inside the perimeter.
