Chapter 2 - THE PINK LUNCHBOX OF SECRETS

In the dark kitchen, Mara pressed Lily against the stainless-steel prep table. The hum of the refrigerators had died, leaving only the sound of their frantic breathing.
"Mommy, I'm scared," Lily whimpered, hugging her small, plastic pink lunchbox tightly against her chest. It was a cheap thing, adorned with cartoon unicorns, a stark contrast to the multi-million-dollar estate.
"Shh, baby, it's okay. Mommy's here," Mara lied, her body trembling. She heard the distant, muffled sound of suppressed gunfire from the main foyer. Gunshots. In the De Luca house, a gunshot meant execution.
Suddenly, the kitchen door swung open. A beam of a tactical flashlight blinded them.
"Mara! Lily! Where are you?"
It was Julian, Alessio’s twenty-four-year-old younger brother. He was dressed in a tailored suit, but he held a matte-black handgun. He looked panicked, his hair disheveled.
"Julian!" Mara cried out in relief. "What’s happening? The lights—"
"The house is compromised. Moretti’s remnants are hitting us," Julian said quickly, grabbing Mara’s arm. "Alessio is trapped in the parlor. We need to get you two out through the servant’s tunnel. Come on!"
As Julian pulled them down the narrow, unlit corridor toward the basement, Lily stumbled, dropping her pink lunchbox. The plastic latch broke, and the contents spilled across the concrete floor.
A half-eaten ham sandwich, a juice box, and a thick, leather-bound small notebook.
Julian stopped dead in his tracks. The beam of his flashlight locked onto the notebook. It wasn't a child's diary. It was an old, weathered ledger with the De Luca crest embossed in gold on the cover—the legendary "Black Book" of the family's secret Swiss accounts, a book that had gone missing the night Clara died.
"Where did you get that?" Julian’s voice changed instantly. The panic vanished, replaced by a cold, sharp edge.
Mara stared at the book, confused. "Lily... what is that?"
Lily, tears streaming down her face, reached for it. "I found it in the greenhouse game-room, under the loose floorboard where I look for lucky pennies. I thought it was a drawing book. It has pretty lists of names and numbers..."
Julian lowered his flashlight, aiming it directly at Lily’s face. He raised his gun, pointing it at the little girl.
"Give it to me, Mara. Give it to me right now, or the kid doesn't make it to her ninth birthday."
Mara felt her blood turn to ice. The realization hit her like a physical blow. Julian wasn't trying to rescue them. He was hunting them.
"It was you," Mara whispered, stepping in front of her daughter, shielding her body with her own. "Gideon didn't work for the Morettis. He worked for you. You killed Clara."
Julian smiled, a charming, psychopathic grin that looked terrifyingly out of place in the dim flashlight beam. "Clara found out I was skimming from the construction funds. She was going to tell Alessio. My big, perfect brother would have fed me to the pigs. So, Gideon and I took care of her. But the idiot Gideon lost the ledger during the chaos. And all this time, a maid’s brat had it in a pink lunchbox."
"Julian, please," Mara begged, tears blinding her. "She's just a child. She can't read the codes. We won't say anything!"
"I know you won't," Julian said, cocking the pistol. "Because dead maids don't talk."

BANG.
A shot echoed through the narrow corridor. But it didn't come from Julian’s gun.
