Chapter 4 - THE HIDDEN ROOM IN THE GREENHOUSE

Three weeks passed.
Mara and Lily were relocated to the De Luca fortress in the Hamptons—a heavily fortified estate surrounded by high concrete walls, motion sensors, and twenty-four-hour armed patrols.
Mara no longer wore a uniform. She was given a luxurious suite, and Lily had more toys than she could ever play with. Yet, the luxury felt like a gilded cage. The mafia world was an ocean of secrets, and Mara knew they were drowning in it.
Alessio had changed. The red crayon heart had been washed away long ago, but something else had altered in his demeanor. He spent less time in his smoky study and more time sitting at the breakfast table, watching Lily draw. He was a man trying to remember how to be human.
But the past wasn't done with them.
One afternoon, while Alessio was away in the city handling the fallout of Julian’s arrest, Lily wandered into the estate's massive Victorian greenhouse. Unlike the Westchester house, this greenhouse was filled with exotic orchids and white lilies—no roses.
Mara found her sitting by a large, ornate stone fountain in the center of the glass structure.
"Look, Mommy," Lily said, pointing at the base of the fountain. "The stone is loose here too. Just like the old house."
Mara’s heart skipped a beat. She knelt down next to Lily. Sure enough, a section of the marble filigree at the fountain's base was slightly misaligned.
Instinct, driven by three weeks of paranoia, took over. Mara pressed against the stone. With a heavy, grinding sound, a hidden panel slid open, revealing a dusty, electronic keypad.
But the keypad wasn't asking for a code. It was asking for a fingerprint.
Suddenly, a shadow fell over them.
Mara gasped, spinning around, pushing Lily behind her.
It was Marco, Alessio’s consigliere and closest childhood friend. He was a quiet man with a scarred face, always loyal, always silent. He held a silver tray with a glass of lemonade for Lily.
"You shouldn't be playing near the fountain, Miss Mara," Marco said, his voice smooth and neutral. "It's... unstable."
"Marco," Mara said, trying to keep her voice steady. "What is this? Alessio told me this house was built by his father. Did his father have secrets too?"
Marco placed the tray down on a nearby iron table. He looked at the keypad, his eyes dark and unreadable.
"The De Luca family is built on secrets, Mara. Some secrets protect us. Some secrets are meant to bury us alive." He stepped closer, his gaze dropping to Lily. "Your daughter has a strange gift for finding things that should remain hidden."
"We didn't see anything," Mara said quickly, backing away. "Come on, Lily, let's go inside."
"Mara," Marco called out just as they reached the greenhouse doors. "Tell me... when Lily found that ledger in Westchester, did she find anything else? A key, perhaps? A small, silver key with a raven engraved on it?"
Mara stopped. She remembered cleaning Lily’s pink lunchbox the day after the attack. Hidden under the plastic lining, she had found a small, silver key. She had kept it in her pocket, forgetting to mention it to Alessio amidst the chaos.

"No," Mara lied, her heart pounding. "Just the book."
Marco smiled, a slow, chilling expression. "Good. Because if that key exists, it opens a box that contains the truth about why Clara really died. And trust me... Alessio is not ready for that truth."
