Chapter 3 - THE STRANGE SMELL OF ROSES

Julian gasped, dropping his flashlight as a bullet shattered his right shoulder. He stumbled backward against the concrete wall, his gun clattering to the floor.
Through the darkness, a heavy figure materialized. Alessio De Luca strode down the corridor, a smoking Beretta in his hand. The red crayon heart on his cheek was smeared with soot and blood—not his own. Behind him, three loyal guards advanced, their night-vision goggles glowing an eerie green.
"Alessio..." Julian groaned, clutching his bleeding shoulder, his face pale with terror. "It's not what it looks like... Gideon, he forced me... he threatened to kill me too!"
Alessio didn't say a word. He walked up to his younger brother, kicked Julian’s fallen gun down the hallway, and grabbed Julian by the collar of his expensive suit. With a brutal twist, he threw Julian to the floor right next to the spilled contents of the pink lunchbox.
Alessio looked down at the gold-embossed ledger. He picked it up, his large fingers tracing the initials C.D. scratched into the inside cover. Clara’s handwriting.
"She kept the records," Alessio said, his voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of all human emotion. "She knew you were a traitor, Julian. She died protecting this family’s legacy from its own blood."
"Alessio, please! We're brothers! The same mother!" Julian wept, groveling on the floor.
Alessio looked at Mara, who was holding a shaking Lily tightly against her chest. "Are you hurt?"
"No," Mara choked out. "But Mr. De Luca... Gideon... where is he?"
"Dead," Alessio said flatly. "He chose not to speak. My brother, however, will be much more talkative."
Alessio turned back to his guards. "Secure Julian in the wine cellar. Keep him alive until I have every name of every mole in my organization. If he passes out, wake him up with salt water."
"Yes, Boss," the guards barked, dragging a screaming Julian away into the darkness.
The mansion was secure now, the strike team neutralized, but the air was still heavy with the scent of burning gunpowder, rain, and that faint, sickening smell of roses from the broken perfume vial Gideon had carried.
Alessio knelt down in front of Lily. The feared mafia don, who had just ordered the torture of his own brother, lowered himself to the little girl's eye level.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out the small, broken latch from her pink lunchbox. He placed it gently back into her hand.
"You found my wife's book," Alessio said gently, his rough voice softening just a fraction.
"I'm sorry I took it, sir," Lily whispered, sniffing. "I just liked the gold letters."
"Don't be sorry," Alessio said, reaching up to touch the smeared red heart on his cheek. "You saved my life tonight, little one. Both of you."
He looked up at Mara. Her uniform was torn, her hands covered in dust. She was a maid, a woman paid minimum wage to scrub his floors, yet she had stood between a bullet and her child without a second thought.
"The house is no longer safe for you," Alessio said, standing up. "Julian’s men outside will know the hit failed. They will target anyone who was in this room."
May you like
"Where do we go?" Mara asked, panic rising again. "I have no money, no family..."
"You stay with me," Alessio said. "From tonight on, you are not my maid, Mara. You are under my personal protection. And anyone who looks at you wrong will answer to me."
