Chapter 18 - The Uninvited GuestThe heavy private elevator chime echoed down the hallway outside our penthouse door.

I slammed my office door shut, stepping into the foyer just as the private elevator doors slid open with a soft ding.

Clara Vance stepped out, shaking the rain off an expensive designer umbrella. She looked impeccably manicured, her sharp, predatory gaze scanning the luxurious entryway before landing squarely on me.

"Well, well, well," Clara sneered, a cold, condescending smile touching her lips. "The great Tobias Marrow, living in domestic bliss while my nephew Julian is exiled to London to clean up your corporate messes."

I stepped forward, towering over her, my voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "You have thirty seconds to turn around and get back in that elevator before I have building security throw you into the Hudson River."

Clara didn't flinch. She adjusted her diamond-encrusted brooch, her eyes gleaming with malice.

"Is that any way to talk to your mother-in-law's closest confidante?" Clara mocked, taking a slow step forward into my foyer. "Or did you conveniently forget to mention to Elena that her little biotech firm in London is currently under federal investigation for insider trading?"

The air in the hallway turned to ice.

"What did you say?" I snarled, grabbing her forearm with enough force to make her wince.

Before Clara could answer, the master bedroom door clicked open. Elena walked out, wearing a silk robe, rubbing her eyes sleepily.

"Tobias? Who is at the door—?"

Elena stopped dead in her tracks as her eyes landed on Clara Vance standing in our foyer. The color drained entirely from Elena's face, her green eyes widening in absolute horror.

"Clara..." Elena whispered, her voice trembling. "What are you doing here?"
