Chapter 6 - The Chase Through Midtown"Where are you going?!" Richard yelled, chasing me down the private executive hallway toward the VIP elevators.

"Keep the auditors working!" I threw over my shoulder as the elevator doors slid open. I punched the basement parking garage button with enough force to shatter the glass panel.

The descent of forty-two floors took less than twenty seconds, but it felt like an eternity. When the doors chimed open, I sprinted across the polished concrete toward my personal silver Aston Martin Vantage.

My phone buzzed violently in my pocket. Caller ID: Elena.

I swiped answer and hit speakerphone as I threw myself into the driver's seat, gunning the engine to life.

"Elena! Where is he taking you?" I demanded, tires screeching as I tore out of the underground parking structure into the chaotic Midtown traffic.

"Tobias, stop!" Elena's voice came through the car speakers, frantic and breathless. "You're making a mistake! Julian has nothing to do with—"

"He has my sons in his car trying to flee the country, Elena! He booked a flight to London!"

"That was my idea!" she screamed over the roar of the city wind.

I slammed on the brakes as a yellow cab cut me off, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Your idea?"

"Yes! Because every time you get angry, you destroy everything in your path! You think you can just swoop in with your money and your lawyers and take over our lives like a hostile acquisition? We're human beings, Tobias! Not a corporate merger!"

"I am their father, Elena!" I roared back, the volume shaking the cabin of my car. "You don't get to erase me for three years and then hand my children to the man who betrayed me!"

"We are at JFK Airport, Terminal Four," she whispered fiercely before the line suddenly disconnected.

I didn't hesitate. I wrenched the steering wheel hard, flooring the gas pedal as I directed the navigation system toward the Van Wyck Expressway.
