Chapter 4 - THE ICE KING’S SMILEFor ten full seconds, no one moved.

Serena sat frozen in her velvet chair, her chest heaving beneath the torn silk bodice of her wedding gown. The color had completely drained from her face, leaving her looking like a porcelain doll dropped on a stone floor.
“He... he betrayed me,” she whispered, her voice barely a rattle in her throat. “Julian... he took everything. All my accounts, all the offshore shelters, everything we stole from Vanguard... it’s all in his name now.”
Adrian didn’t say a word. He walked back to the head of the table, picked up the glass of ice water, and took a slow, deliberate sip.
Benjamin Cole cleared his throat, adjusting his glasses nervously. “Boss... our primary liquidity accounts in Zurich show a massive outflow. Julian Bellamy just drained forty percent of our reserve cash through the loophole Serena created.”
Serena looked up, her eyes wide, desperate, and suddenly pathetic.
“Adrian,” she choked out, tears finally breaking through her professional facade. “You heard him. It was a trap. He used me! He made me marry you so he could steal your money! But we can destroy him together. You have the guns, you have the men in Chicago, in Philadelphia—if we hit Julian’s penthouse tonight, we can take it all back!”
Adrian set the glass down. The ice clinked softly against the rim.
He looked down at her—not with rage, not with fury, but with the flat, chilling curiosity of a scientist observing an insect under a microscope.
“Serena,” Adrian said softly.
“Yes? Yes, Adrian? We can strike tonight—before he transfers the funds to the Swiss accounts—”
“Did you really think I kept my entire liquid fortune in a single offshore holding account accessible by a marriage loophole?”
Serena stopped breathing. Her mouth stayed slightly open, her eyes darting frantically across his face.
“What... what do you mean?”
Adrian turned to his consigliere. “Benjamin. Tell our guest where the syndicate’s actual reserves are housed.”
Benjamin smiled—a thin, tired, remarkably sharp smile that matched his boss’s.
“The accounts Serena and her uncle targeted this morning were our public-facing tax shelters, Mrs. Vale,” Benjamin said politely, as if explaining a routine banking procedure to a client. “Roughly forty million dollars in parked assets designed specifically to look like a massive fortune to federal auditors and ambitious relatives.”
Serena shook her head frantically. “No... no, that’s impossible! The ledgers Daniel Hart stole—they showed billions!”
“Daniel Hart was an honest, mid-level auditor who found a minor tax discrepancy in a shell company we used in 2021,” Adrian interrupted, his voice cutting through her panic like a scalpel. “He didn't steal billions. He found forty thousand dollars of unaccounted shipping fees. You panicked, had him killed, and then your uncle used your paranoia to orchestrate this entire farce.”
Adrian stepped closer, leaning down until his eyes were level with hers.
“And as for my actual fortune?” Adrian continued, his lips curving into a smile that didn't reach his eyes. “It’s spread across twelve sovereign vaults in countries that don't have extradition treaties with the United States, backed by physical gold, cryptocurrency nodes you couldn't hack in a thousand lifetimes, and assets held in the names of people who don't exist.”
Serena slumped back into the chair, the last remaining trace of her color vanishing. “Then... why did you play along? Why didn't you stop the wedding?”
Adrian straightened up, brushing an invisible speck of dust from his black lapel.
“Because for five years, Julian Bellamy has been hiding behind federal judges and corporate lawyers, playing a shadow war across the New York docks,” Adrian said quietly. “I needed him to step out into the light. I needed him to claim ownership of those stolen accounts so that under international maritime and syndicate law, he officially becomes a hostile combatant.”
Adrian turned toward the heavy titanium door.
“Benjamin. Send a message to the boys in Zurich and the strike team in Manhattan.”

“Boss?”
“Tell them the wedding is officially over,” Adrian said, his voice echoing coldly off the concrete walls. “And tell them to bring Julian Bellamy to me. Alive, if possible. But I’m not picky.”
