Chapter 8 - THE WHISPER IN THE ARCHIVESDown in the subterranean vault of the East River estate, the blue light of the server racks hummed a steady, hypnotic tune.

Benjamin Cole sat at his primary terminal, his ancient fingers gliding effortlessly across the mechanical keyboard. On the screen, a new digital file was being compiled, encrypted with a twenty-five-layer quantum key that only he and Adrian possessed.
The file name at the top of the screen read: PROJECT BELLAMY – ARCHIVED.
A shadow fell across the desk.
Benjamin didn't look up; he already knew who it was.
“Everything secure, Benjamin?” Adrian’s deep voice echoed softly off the concrete walls.
“Fully secured, Boss,” Benjamin replied, tapping the enter key to finalize the encryption. “Julian Bellamy is currently serving as an unscheduled cargo escort to South America, Serena is three days away from her new life as Sarah Miller in Nova Scotia, and the federal task force has officially closed the Vanguard inquiry due to ‘insufficient verifiable evidence.’”
Adrian walked slowly around the desk, his hands clasped behind his back, staring at the glowing data streams.
“And the Vanguard board?”
“They’ve elected a new chairman,” Benjamin said, a dry smile touching the corners of his mouth. “A quiet, unassuming fellow with no ties to the syndicate whatsoever. Furthermore, our anonymous donations to the municipal orphanage have increased by three hundred percent this month.”
Adrian nodded slowly, his eyes reflecting the blue light of the terminal.
“Good.” He turned toward the heavy titanium exit doors. “Make sure our security protocols around the east wing are doubled. I don’t want any more unexpected guests crashing our breakfast.”
“Understood, Boss,” Benjamin said, leaning back in his leather chair. As Adrian reached the doorway, the old consigliere couldn't resist a rare moment of dry humor. “By the way... are we registering any future wedding dates on the calendar?”

Adrian stopped with his hand on the steel frame. He didn't turn around, but his broad shoulders rose and fell in a slow, deliberate breath.
“Not unless she brings a better photograph, Benjamin.”
