Chapter 1 - The Weight of the Badge

The silence in the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was thick enough to choke on. The heavy crystal chandeliers overhead seemed to dim in the sudden drop of collective breath. Julian Sterling stood frozen, his mouth half-open, eyes wide with a terror that finally eclipsed his arrogance. Beside him, Beatrice looked like she had seen a ghost, her manicured fingers trembling so violently that the stem of her champagne flute fractured, spilling amber liquid across the pristine white linen of a nearby table.
"Ms... Ms. Vance?" Julian choked out, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. He looked from the diamond-encrusted sapphire gown back to my face, searching desperately for the meek, bleach-stained cleaning woman he had ordered around just three hours ago. "There... there is some mistake. This is Eleanor. She is... she lives in my house. She cleans my floors!"
I didn't blink. I let the silence stretch, tightening the noose around his composure until his breathing came in short, ragged gasps.
"Correction, Julian," I said, my voice carrying effortlessly across the cavernous room without a hint of tremor. "You permitted me to occupy a room in your house. You permitted me to labor under your roof. But a house built on arrogance has no foundation, and an empire built on contempt is already in ruins."
I opened the black leather folder in my hands. Inside lay the legal apparatus of their destruction: asset freezes, real estate foreclosures, and the immediate revocation of every corporate credit line tied to Sterling Enterprises.
"Security," I commanded, and the two guards who had initially moved to throw me out straightened instantly, pivoting to face Julian and Beatrice instead. "Escort these two individuals to the terrace. They are no longer welcome inside any property owned or operated by Vance Global."

"You can't do this!" Beatrice shrieked, shattering the fragile decorum of high society as she lunged forward, her face contorted with rage. "You little parasite! We fed you! We clothed you! You were nothing before my son picked you off the streets!"
"And I repaid you with five years of silent observation," I replied coldly, snapping the folder shut with a sound like a gunshot. "Every fraudulent contract, every embezzled subsidiary fund, every shell corporation you used to siphon capital from Vance Global—it is all cataloged right here. Enjoy the fresh air on the terrace, Beatrice. It will be the last luxury you experience for a very long time."
