Six months later, the corporate landscape of New York had entirely transformed. The name Sterling was now merely a cautionary footnote in business school textbooks—a textbook case of corporate arrogance meeting swift, absolute justice.
I stood on the glass balcony of the Vance Global Tower, looking down at the glittering expanse of Manhattan spread out beneath the evening sky. The wind caught the fabric of my dress, but I didn't shiver. The days of freezing marble floors and scalding bleach were gone, replaced by the absolute warmth of total control.
My phone chimed on the table beside me. It was an anonymous notification from a low-security debtor's registry upstate.
Subject Julian Sterling: Employed as a night-shift janitor at a municipal transit station. Current task: scrubbing subway platform floors.
