Chapter 5 - The Ultimate Audit

By sunrise, the grand mansion was completely silent. The Sterling family heirlooms—mostly cheap trinkets and artificially inflated art pieces bought with embezzled funds—were piled neatly in cardboard boxes on the front lawn. Julian and Beatrice sat on top of the boxes, shivering in the morning chill, surrounded by a dozen reporters who had caught wind of the spectacular corporate collapse of Sterling Enterprises.
Inside the master study, I sat behind the massive mahogany desk that Julian had once forbidden me to touch. My laptop screen glowed with real-time analytics of the corporate absorption. Sterling Enterprises was officially liquidated, its remaining assets folded into a charitable foundation dedicated to supporting victims of workplace abuse and financial fraud.
Marcus knocked softly on the open door before stepping inside, holding a thick manila folder.
"The media is having a field day, Ms. Vance," Marcus reported, a subtle grin playing on his lips. "Stock prices for Vance Global are up four percent following the announcement of the acquisition. And Julian has officially filed for bankruptcy protection."
"Good," I murmured, signing the final authorization document with a sleek fountain pen. "What about his mother?"
"Admitted to a private clinic for exhaustion and high blood pressure," Marcus replied. "Though the doctors say her condition is entirely stable—she's mostly just furious that the nurses won't bring her espresso in a silver cup."
I stood up, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the front lawns. Down below, I could see Julian arguing frantically with a local cab driver who refused to let him board without upfront cash—cash Julian no longer possessed.
For five years, they had tried to break my spirit. They thought humility was a weakness and servitude was a permanent condition. They never realized that the person holding the sponge was also holding the keys to the entire kingdom.
"Marcus," I said quietly, adjusting the cuffs of my sapphire blouse.

"Yes, ma'am?"
"Prepare the press release for our international expansion. Let's make sure the world knows that Vance Global is entering a new era. An era where those who build their success on the backs of the vulnerable will always find themselves answering to the floor."
