Chapter 4 - Midnight IntrusionThe clock on the antique mantel in the East Wing reading room clicked softly: 2:14 AM.

Clara couldn't sleep. The adrenaline from the afternoon's near-disaster was still humming through her veins like liquid electricity. She sat in a velvet armchair by the window, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket, watching the moonlight cut silver patterns across the manicured lawns below.
Emma was fast asleep in the next room, breathing softly, clutching her one-eyed stuffed rabbit as if she were safe in the middle of a fortress.
Which, technically, she was.
Or so Clara had thought.
A sudden, sharp sound cut through the quiet night. It wasn't the wind, and it wasn't the heavy footfalls of the Duca guards patrolling the corridors. It was a dull, metallic clink—the unmistakable sound of a glass cutter scoring a diamond pane downstairs in the service pantry.
Clara froze. Her breath caught in her throat.
She stood up slowly, the wool blanket slipping from her shoulders onto the floor. She crept toward the heavy oak door of the suite, pressing her ear against the cool wood.
Nothing. Just the heavy, oppressive silence of the mansion at midnight.
Then, a low, muffled growl echoed from the main hallway outside.
It wasn't a human sound. It was Pino.
The massive Doberman, stationed right outside their door as Lorenzo's living security system, let out a deep, vibrating rumble that shook the floorboards beneath Clara’s bare feet.
Clack. Clack. Clack.
Rapid, silent footsteps hit the corridor carpet. Not the heavy, disciplined march of the Duca security detail. These footsteps were light, frantic, and multiple.
Intruders.
Before Clara could turn back toward the bedroom to grab Emma, the handle of the East Wing outer door began to turn. Slowly. Quietly.
Panic seized her chest. She looked around the dimly lit room in a frenzy, searching for a weapon, a heavy vase, anything. Her hand grasped a heavy brass candlestick resting on the mahogany desk.
Click.
The door swung open an inch.
Through the narrow crack, Clara saw the glint of a suppressed firearm barrel sliding into the room, followed by a pair of dark, tactical-clad boots.
Suddenly, hell broke loose in the hallway.
A terrifying, blood-curdling roar tore through the corridor—Pino charging with 125 pounds of pure, unadulterated muscle and razor-sharp teeth. A muffled scream of agony echoed, followed by the sickening crunch of bone and a heavy body slamming hard against the wallpapered hallway.
"Clear the room! Clear the—argh!"
Gunshots cracked through the air—two muffled, deafening thuds that tore through the drywall inches from the doorframe where Clara stood frozen.
"Mommy?"
A small, terrified voice whimpered from the bedroom doorway. Emma stood rubbing her eyes, clutching her stuffed rabbit, looking directly into the chaos of the hallway.
"Emma, stay back!" Clara screamed, lunging forward to scoop her toddler up into her arms just as the door burst completely off its hinges.
A man in a black tactical balaclava stumbled backward into the room, his arm bleeding profusely where Pino had locked his massive jaws around his forearm. Behind him stood another intruder, leveling a silenced pistol straight at Clara’s chest.
Clara squeezed her eyes shut, pulling Emma tighter against her body, shielding her child with her own spine.
Bang.
The gunshot rang out—sharp, deafening, and terrifyingly close.
But Clara didn't feel pain.
Instead, the intruder with the pistol suddenly froze, his eyes going wide and vacant. A neat, perfectly round hole appeared dead-center in his tactical forehead, and a fine mist of crimson sprayed across the floral wallpaper behind him. He dropped like a felled tree, crashing heavily onto the Persian rug.
Standing in the shattered doorway, wisps of grey smoke curling lazily from the barrel of a custom Sig Sauer pistol in his right hand, was Lorenzo Duca.

His face was a mask of cold, unyielding death. His dark hair was slightly tousled, and his silk shirt was stained with a dark spatter of blood that wasn't his.
"Get behind me," Lorenzo commanded, his voice like grinding stone.
