Chapter 8 - The Empire's New QueenSix months later.

The gardens of the Duca mansion were no longer a place of quiet, brooding shadows. Bright yellow daffodils and blooming white hydrangeas lined the gravel paths, catching the warm, golden light of a late spring afternoon.
On the sprawling lawn near the central fountain, a three-year-old girl in a bright yellow sundress was running in circles, laughing hysterically while a 125-pound Doberman chased a tennis ball behind her, happily wagging his tail for the first time in his life.
Sitting on a wrought-iron bench beneath the shade of a weeping willow, watching them with a soft, peaceful smile, was Clara.
She wore an elegant emerald-silk dress, her hair pinned up loosely, looking every bit the mistress of the estate—not out of force or fear, but out of absolute love and mutual respect.
Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel behind her.
A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind, pulling her back against a warm, solid chest. A chin rested comfortably on her shoulder.
"Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Duca," Lorenzo murmured, his voice rich and deep, carrying a warmth that had entirely replaced the ice of the past.
Clara leaned back into his embrace, tilting her head up to meet his slate-grey eyes, which were now completely free of the shadows that had haunted them for thirteen years.
"I was just thinking about the trash bins," Clara smiled, reaching up to trace the faint, faded scar along his jawline. "And about a little girl who decided to tell a terrifying mafia boss that he smelled like coffee."
Lorenzo chuckled, a rich, genuine sound that echoed across the garden, catching Emma’s attention in the distance. The little girl squealed with delight, scooped up her one-eyed stuffed rabbit by its ear, and came barreling across the lawn toward them as fast as her small legs could carry her.
"Daddy! Mommy! Look what Pino found!" Emma shouted, panting as she collided directly into Lorenzo’s legs.
Without a moment's hesitation, the most feared mafia boss in New York bent down—not caring about his custom Italian suit, not caring about pride, not caring about anything in the world except the bright, happy face of the little girl who had saved his soul—and scooped her up high into the air.

Emma laughed, throwing her arms around his neck, while Clara reached out to take Lorenzo’s other hand.
The sun dipped low behind the Manhattan skyline, bathing the entire courtyard in brilliant gold. The empire was secure, the ghosts of the past were finally laid to rest, and for the first time in his life, Lorenzo Duca knew what it truly meant to be home.
