Chapter 7 - The Dawn After the StormThe first pale rays of autumn sunlight were just beginning to spill over the jagged Manhattan skyline when the black SUVs rolled back through the wrought-iron gates of the Duca estate.

Inside the mansion, the air was calm, washed clean of the terror that had gripped it hours before. The security detail had been doubled, the bullet holes in the East Wing corridor were already being patched by a discreet maintenance crew, and Pino the Doberman was back to his post resting peacefully outside the double doors.

Clara sat at the mahogany dining table in the private family kitchen, staring down into a cup of cooling coffee. Emma was sleeping soundly in the adjacent nursery, wrapped in warm blankets, safe from the brutal realities of the world outside.

The heavy kitchen door swung open.

Lorenzo walked in. He had discarded his blood-stained overcoat; his white shirt was open at the collar, his sleeves rolled up, revealing tired, drawn features. There was a faint smudge of gunpowder near his jawline, but his slate-grey eyes were clear.

He stopped when he saw her.

Clara stood up instantly from the table, her heart hammering against her ribs. She looked at him from head to toe, searching for new injuries, looking for the monster the headlines whispered about.

Instead, she saw a man standing at the end of a very long, very dark road, finally finding his way back to the light.

"It's over," Lorenzo said quietly, his voice raspy with exhaustion. "Moretti’s operations in Brooklyn have been dismantled. Sal is in custody. Vincent Moretti has sued for terms of total surrender. Nobody will ever touch you or Emma again."

Clara let out a breath she felt like she'd been holding for thirteen years. Tears welled up in her eyes, spilling over her lashes, but this time, they weren't tears of fear.

She walked across the tiled floor, closing the distance between them until she stood right in front of him. Lorenzo looked down at her, his broad shoulders tensing slightly as if expecting her to pull away in horror at what he had done tonight.

Instead, Clara reached out. Her small, trembling hands gently touched the lapels of his shirt, smoothing down the fabric where the chaos of the night had left its mark.

"You didn't have to go that far," Clara whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "You risked your entire empire for us."

Lorenzo reached up, his large, warm hand covering hers, pressing her palm firmly against his chest, right over his heart—a heart that had beaten in cold isolation for over a decade.

"You smell like coffee," Lorenzo murmured softly, repeating the very words Emma had whispered to him on the gravel path less than twenty-four hours ago.

May you like

A sudden, watery smile broke across Clara’s face, and a soft laugh escaped her lips. "You're impossible, Lorenzo Duca."

"Maybe," he replied, his gaze locking onto hers with a fierce, burning intensity that left no room for doubt. "But I'm never letting you go."
