Chapter 5 - THE FINAL REVELATION (PART 6)

Elena’s hands shook uncontrollably as she pulled the worn photograph back out of Lily’s hands.

She stared at the image. The younger Marcus holding the newborn baby with the crescent birthmark.

She had always believed that baby was her daughter—Lily. She had believed Marcus was Lily’s father, the man who had abandoned his child to burn in a fire.

“No…” Elena gasped, stepping back, her mind reeling as the pieces began to fit together in a nightmare configuration. “No, no, no…”

“That photo wasn’t taken six years ago, Elena,” Marcus said, tears finally streaming down his cheeks. “That photo was taken twelve years ago.”

The entire room seemed to spin. The police officers stopped moving. The live stream comments halted as millions of viewers tried to process the mathematical impossibility.

If the photo was taken twelve years ago… the baby in the picture wasn’t six-year-old Lily.

“The baby in that picture…” Elena breathed, her voice barely audible. “…is Leo.”

Marcus nodded slowly, his head bowed in shame. “Leo isn’t Victoria’s son. And he isn’t my son. Victoria couldn’t have children. When Arthur Thorne had a child out of wedlock twelve years ago, he paid me to take the baby away and raise him as my own so his corporate image wouldn't be ruined. Leo is Arthur Thorne’s true biological heir. Leo owns everything.”

Leo, sitting in the corner, raised his head. His eyes were wide with shock. “What…? I’m… I’m not your son?”

“You are Arthur Thorne’s son, Leo,” Marcus confessed, his voice breaking. “I raised you to be spoiled, cruel, and foolish because I needed you to be easy to control. If you were stupid, I could manage your trust fund forever. But this house… this company… it was always yours.”

Elena stood paralyzed. The boy who had just thrown a plate of cake at her daughter… the boy who had mocked poor people and ordered them out of his sight… was her adopted father’s real son. Her half-brother.

And Lily?

Elena looked down at the little girl standing beside her.

“If Leo is Arthur’s son…” Elena whispered, looking at Lily with terrifying clarity. “…then who are you, Lily?”

Lily didn’t look confused. She didn’t look scared.

The soft, innocent, helpless expression on the six-year-old girl’s face slowly melted away, replaced by an unsettling, calm smile that didn’t belong on a child.

She reached up and pulled off the small, fake crescent birthmark applied to her wrist with latex paint, dropping it onto the marble floor.
