Chapter 1 - The Weight of His Name

Hook: "You will look at her when you speak, or you will never speak in this city again."
The silence in the Grand Plaza ballroom was no longer just quiet; it was heavy, suffocating, and thick with the scent of spilled expensive champagne and raw terror.
Dante Russo did not move. He stood like a monolith of dark power, his tailored charcoal suit cutting a sharp silhouette against the extravagant, gilded walls of the venue. His grip on Ava’s wrist was firm, a steady anchor of warmth against her trembling skin, but his eyes—cold, calculating, and dangerously beautiful—were locked entirely on Celeste Waverly.
Ava’s manager, Harold, shoved his way through the crowd, sweating profusely through his cheap tuxedo. "Mr. Russo! Please, accept my deepest apologies," Harold stammered, his hands fluttering nervously. "Ava is incredibly clumsy. She’s just an independent contractor we brought in to help with the heavy lifting. I will fire her immediately. She won’t ruin your evening further."
Celeste crossed her arms, her silver dress catching the light as she regained her confidence, emboldened by Harold's groveling. "Exactly. Some people simply don't belong in high society, Dante. She’s a liability to the venue."
Dante didn’t look at Harold. He didn't look at Celeste. Instead, he slowly reached into his breast pocket with his free hand and pulled out a pristine, white silk handkerchief. Without a word, he dropped to one knee right there on the wet, marble floor.
The crowd gasped. A billionaire. A man whispered to rule the docks, the unions, and the very concrete New York was built upon, was kneeling at the feet of a curvy event planner covered in alcohol.
"Mr. Russo?" Ava whispered, her voice cracking.
Dante ignored the murmurs around them. Gently, using the silk cloth, he began to wipe the sticky, expensive champagne from Ava’s bruised ankle. His fingers brushed against her skin, sending an electric jolt straight up her spine. When he finished, he stood back up, his towering 6'3" frame instantly throwing a shadow over Celeste.
"You have a lot to say about who belongs here, Celeste," Dante said, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that echoed in the quiet room.
"Dante, I was just—" Celeste started, her cheeks flushing.
"Did I give you permission to use my first name?" Dante cut her off. The temperature in the room dropped ten degrees. He turned his head slightly toward his head of security, a massive, scarred man named Marco. "Marco. Who funded the Waverly Shipping expansion in Brooklyn last quarter?"
"We did, Boss," Marco replied instantly, his arms crossed over his chest. "A seven-figure private loan."
Dante looked back at Celeste, a cruel, beautiful smile touching his lips. "By tomorrow morning, that loan is called in full. Default terms apply. And as for your agency, Harold..." Dante’s eyes slid to the trembling manager. "The Russo Foundation is pulling its contract from your firm. Effective sixty seconds ago."
"Mr. Russo, please! That will ruin us!" Harold cried out, turning pale.
"Then I suggest you find a better way to treat the woman who actually keeps your business afloat," Dante said coldly. He turned his full attention back to Ava, his dark eyes softening just a fraction. "Can you walk, Ava?"
Ava swallowed hard, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "I... I think so."
She tried to take a step, but her sprained ankle gave out immediately. Before she could fall a second time, Dante’s arm swept under her knees and around her lower back. With effortless, terrifying strength, he lifted her into his arms.
Ava gasped, instinctively wrapping her hands around his broad shoulders. Her curvy frame pressed flush against his hard chest, her wild, dark curls cascading over his arm.

"Let's make one thing exceptionally clear to everyone in this room," Dante announced, his voice carrying to the furthest corners of the ballroom as he carried her toward the exit. "Ava Marlow is under my personal protection. If anyone so much as breathes the same air as her without her permission, you will answer to me."
As Dante walked out, leaving a ruined champagne tower and a broken elite social circle behind him, Celeste screamed in frustration. But Ava could only focus on the steady, dangerous thumping of the mafia boss's heart beneath her fingertips.
