Chapter 3 - Secrets in the Silk

Hook: A hidden ledger, a beautiful dress, and a text message that changes everything.
Three days passed, and Ava found herself living a life she never could have dreamed of. Her ankle had healed completely, thanks to the specialized care Dante insisted on. She was no longer wearing her practical, plain event coordinator clothes. Instead, Dante’s staff had provided an entire wardrobe of breathtaking silk dresses, tailored specifically to hug her soft, hourglass curves in all the right places.
Yet, Dante was a ghost. He left early in the morning and returned late at night, his face hardened by whatever dark business he conducted in the shadows of the city. Still, every evening, a single red rose was left outside her bedroom door.
On the fourth night, Ava was restless. The mansion was quiet, save for the distant patter of rain. Seeking something to read, she wandered into Dante's private study. The room smelled of him, making her heart flutter.
As she walked past his heavy mahogany desk, her sleeve caught on a small, hidden lever beneath the drawer. With a soft click, a secret compartment popped open.
Ava froze. Inside lay a leather-bound journal with a gold crest—the Russo family syndicate ledger. Beside it was a stack of surveillance photographs.
Curiosity overriding her fear, Ava picked up the photos. Her breath trapped in her throat.
The pictures weren’t of Dante's rivals. They were of her.
There were photos of her buying coffee three months ago. Photos of her organizing an event downtown last month. Photos of her laughing with her sister. Dante hadn't just noticed her at the gala three days ago; he had been watching her for months.
Suddenly, her phone vibrated in her pocket. It was an unknown number.
Unknown: Do you think he saved you because he cares, Ava? Look at the ledger. Look up the name 'Marlow.' Your father didn't die in an accident. Dante Russo owns his soul—and now, he owns yours.
Before Ava could process the message, the heavy oak doors of the study swung open.
Dante stood in the doorway, his tie loosened, his eyes instantly locking onto the open secret compartment and the photos in her hand. The air in the room instantly turned to ice.
"You shouldn't be in here, Ava," Dante said, his voice dangerously calm as he stepped into the room, closing the door behind him with a deafening click.
Ava backed up against the desk, holding the photos to her chest. "You've been tracking me. For months. Why? Who am I to you, Dante? And what does your family have to do with my father?"
Dante stopped just inches from her, his presence overwhelming. He didn't look angry; he looked predatory, like a man whose deepest secret had just been dragged into the light.
"Your father was a brilliant accountant, Ava. Too brilliant," Dante said softly, reaching out to take the photos from her hand, his fingers brushing against hers. "He discovered a multi-million dollar embezzlement scheme inside the Waverly empire. He was going to expose them. So, the Waverlys had him eliminated."

Ava's eyes widened, tears welling up. "The Waverlys? Celeste's family?"
"Yes," Dante growled, his jaw tightening. "I've been tracking you to keep you alive, because your father left a digital key to the evidence with you, hidden in something you own. I brought you here to keep you safe from them. But now..." He leaned in, his eyes burning with an intense, unyielding passion. "Now that you're in my world, I have no intention of ever letting you go."
