Chapter 5 - The Bitter Taste of Betrayal

Hook: The real villain isn't who you think it is.
The downfall of the Waverly family was the biggest scandal New York had seen in a century. With the evidence provided by Ava's father's hidden drive, the authorities completely dismantled their empire overnight.
Ava sat in Dante's study, watching the news coverage on the television screen. She felt a profound sense of relief—her father's name was cleared, and his killers were behind bars. But a strange, lingering dread hung over her.
Dante had been gone for hours, handling the fallout of the Waverly assets, many of which were being absorbed into the Russo syndicate.
The study door clicked open. Ava expected to see Dante's towering frame, but instead, Marco, Dante's head of security, stepped inside. His face was grim, a heavy leather folder held tightly under his arm.
"Miss Marlow," Marco said, his voice unusually tense. "The Boss told me to keep you in this room. But I’ve known your father for a long time. He was a good man. You deserve the whole truth."
Ava stood up, her heart dropping into her stomach. "What truth, Marco? What are you talking about?"
Marco placed the leather folder on the desk and opened it. Inside were old financial ledgers dating back ten years. "The Waverlys didn't act alone when they killed your father, Ava. They couldn't have. They needed someone within the underground to authorize the hit, to ensure the police would look the other way."
Ava’s breath hitched. She looked down at the documents. At the bottom of the execution order for her father, right next to Arthur Waverly's signature, was a dark, elegant seal.
The Russo family crest.
"No," Ava whispered, tears blurring her vision. "No, Dante said he was protecting me. He said he was hunting them down for what they did."
"He was hunting them down to tie up loose ends," a voice boomed from the doorway.
Ava spun around. Dante stood there, his coat stained with rain, his dark eyes fixed on the folder on the desk. He didn't look angry; he looked completely emotionless, his cold mafia persona fully front and center.
"Is it true?" Ava screamed, tears streaming down her face. "Did you authorize the hit on my father?!"
Dante took a slow, deliberate step into the room. "Ten years ago, my father ruled the Russo family, Ava. I was just a soldier. My father signed that paper. But when I took over the family, I inherited the ledger. I inherited the guilt."
"You lied to me!" Ava choked out, stepping back, feeling completely betrayed by the man she had begun to love. "You didn't bring me here to protect me from the Waverlys. You brought me here to find the key before anyone else did, so you could destroy the evidence linking the Russos to his death!"
Dante didn't deny it. He stood perfectly still, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle ticked. "Initially, yes. That was the plan."

"I hate you," Ava whispered, the words tearing out of her throat.
Without another word, she grabbed her coat, pushed past Marco, and ran out of the study. Dante didn't stop her. He stood in the center of the dark room, his fists clenched at his sides, letting the only woman who had ever touched his soul walk completely out of his life.
