Chapter 2 - The Confession Beneath the ChandelierJulian blinked, trying to assemble a mask of righteous indignation. He took two steps toward me, holding out his palms in a universal gesture of appeasement.

"Elena, honey, you’re letting your imagination run wild. Everyone had a few drinks tonight. The blindfold game was harmless fun—my friends set it up, I didn't even know who was standing there! And Savannah is like my sister. You know this. Why are you trying to turn our wedding night into a courtroom drama?"

"Sister?" I let out a sharp, humorless laugh that echoed off the high ceiling. "Is that what you call the woman you share secret business ventures and offshore bank accounts with? Or is 'sister' just the code word you use when you're planning how to strip me of my family’s estate?"

Julian’s face drained of every drop of color. The rehearsed panic vanished, replaced by a sudden, feral dart of his eyes toward the corner of the room. I followed his gaze. High up, nestled in the ornate plaster molding above the wardrobe, a tiny black lens blinked with a faint, rhythmic red LED light.

The hidden camera.

Thomas caught the movement. Without a word, he strode across the room, grabbed a heavy mahogany chair, climbed onto the seat, and reached up. With a sharp snap of plastic, he ripped the device from its housing, wires dangling like severed veins.

"Well, well, well," Thomas murmured, inspecting the miniature spy cam in his palm. "High-definition streaming, local storage, and a live audio feed. This isn't a prank, Julian. This is wiretapping and invasion of privacy. In this state, that’s a felony with mandatory prison time."

Savannah’s composure finally cracked. She lunged forward, grabbing at Thomas’s sleeve. "Give that back! You have no right—that’s personal property!"

"Property placed in a private bridal suite belonging to my niece," Thomas shot back, pulling his arm away as if her touch were toxic. "You just dug your own legal grave, sweetheart."

Julian panicked completely now. He turned on Savannah, his mask of loyalty dissolving the second pressure was applied. "See? I told you this was a stupid idea! I told you she’d figure it out!"

Savannah gasped, her eyes widening in betrayal. "You coward! You were the one who said we needed leverage so she wouldn't lock you out of the company funds after the merger!"

My mother stepped forward, her eyes burning with an icy fury that could freeze fire. She didn't yell. Irene never yelled when she was about to destroy someone.

"Merger?" Irene’s voice was barely above a whisper, yet it commanded total silence. "What merger, Julian? My husband left his entire manufacturing conglomerate to Elena on the condition that her spouse sign an absolute prenuptial waiver protecting her assets from external interference. Did you... did you forge documents to bypass that waiver?"

Julian swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing violently. He looked at me, his expression shifting from terror to desperate manipulation. "Elena... please. Don't listen to them. We were just scared. My business is struggling, and I needed security. Savannah just helped me look at options. It doesn't mean I don't love you. The wedding... the wedding was real to me."

"The wedding was real to you," I repeated, stepping closer until I was standing mere inches from him. I could smell the expensive scotch mixed with cheap panic on his breath. "Just like your history with Savannah was real. Just like the plan to humiliate me in front of three hundred guests was real. You wanted to break me down so I’d sign over power of attorney by morning."

I raised my phone, unlocking the screen with a swipe of my thumb.

"Good thing I’ve got every word of your little planning session recorded in crystal-clear high fidelity. And guess what? It’s already auto-syncing to my lawyer’s cloud storage."
