Chapter 5 - ALLIES IN THE DARKHOOK: Locked in a holding cell on Christmas night, an unexpected visitor holds the key to Arthur's dark past.

The holding cell was freezing. The bench was made of cold, unyielding steel, and the smell of industrial disinfectant burned my nose—a terrible reminder of the hospital room from earlier that day.
I sat with my knees pulled to my chest, my mind racing. Charges: Aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and child endangerment.
Arthur had played the board perfectly. He had engineered a crisis, manipulated the police, hijacked CPS, and neutralized me—all in less than twelve hours.
At 2:15 AM, the heavy metal door of the cell block creaked open. A female guard walked down the corridor and unlocked my cell door.
"Elena Vance? You’ve got a visitor. Bail has been posted."
I blinked in shock. "Bail? Who posted it? Mark?"
"Not your husband," the guard replied curtly. "Follow me."
I walked out into the dimly lit booking area, my muscles aching, my spirit completely crushed. Standing near the exit desk was a woman I hadn't seen in over six years.
She was in her late fifties, wearing a sharp black trench coat, her gray hair pulled back in a tight bun.
Grandma Evelyn. Arthur’s ex-wife—the woman Arthur had claimed was "insane" and had successfully banished from the family state decades ago.
"Evelyn?" I whispered.
Evelyn turned, her dark eyes sharp and filled with an iron resolve. "Hello, Elena. I wish our reunion was under better circumstances."
"How... how did you know?"
"Jenna," Evelyn said quietly, stepping forward and wrapping a warm scarf around my trembling shoulders. "She called me from Arthur’s house right before he locked her in the guest bedroom and confiscated her keys. She managed to use an old landline hidden in the pantry to leave me a message."
"Jenna is locked up?" I gasped. "We have to call the police!"
"The police won't search Arthur’s house without a warrant, Elena, and right now, Arthur is a respected former magistrate with the police chief on speed dial," Evelyn said grimly. "We need to move quickly. My car is outside."
We walked out into the freezing night, slipping into Evelyn’s tinted SUV.
"Where is Mark?" I asked, my voice trembling with bitter rage.
"Mark is currently at Arthur’s estate, sitting in the living room, listening to his father explain why this is all 'for the best,'" Evelyn said with profound disgust. "Mark was always weak, Elena. Just like his father trained him to be. Arthur breaks people, dissects their wills, and makes them dependent on him. He did it to me. He tried to do it to Jenna. And now he’s doing it to Lucy."
"Why?" I sobbed, burying my face in my hands. "Why would he burn Lucy? She’s just a child!"
Evelyn started the engine, pulling away from the station. "Because Arthur isn't a grandfather, Elena. He’s a collector. He doesn't love people; he owns them. When you introduced the rule that Lucy didn't have to obey adults blindly, you challenged his absolute authority over the family unit. He couldn't tolerate that."

She turned to look at me, her face illuminated by the dashboard light.
"The slippers were never meant to just hurt her, Elena," Evelyn revealed chillingly. "The chemical he used—Capsaicin-8—he bought it three years ago through an offshore shell company. I know because I’ve been tracking his finances ever since he drove me out of the state. He’s been planning this specific play for months."
