Chapter 8 - CONFRONTATION AT THE ESTATEHOOK: Father against mother, husband against wife—a standoff in the snow.

Ten minutes later, Evelyn’s SUV screeched to a halt in front of Arthur’s grand estate. The morning light was gray and bitter, illuminating the thick blanket of fresh snow on the lawn.

I threw the car door open and ran up the driveway, Evelyn right behind me.

I pushed through the front door, which was unlocked.

The entry hall was silent, except for the sound of quiet, desperate sobbing coming from the living room.

I rounded the corner. Mark was sitting on the floor, his head in his hands, staring at a laptop on the coffee table. Sitting on the couch across from him was Lucy, her feet elevated, her eyes swollen from crying.

"Lucy!" I cried out.

"Mommy!" Lucy gasped, trying to sit up.

Mark jumped to his feet, his face pale, dark circles heavy beneath his eyes. "Elena... what are you doing here? You can't be here, the police—"

"Mark, move out of my way," I said, walking straight toward my daughter.

"Elena, wait!" Mark grabbed my arm. "Dad... Dad showed me the trust fund documents. He showed me the files. He said... he said he was just trying to protect our family’s wealth!"

I slapped him.

The sound cracked like a gunshot through the high-ceilinged room. Mark stumbled back, holding his reddening cheek, looking at me in shock.

"He poisoned your daughter, Mark!" I screamed, tears streaming down my face. "He put chemical riot agent inside her Christmas gift! He locked your sister in a room! He spent years framing me! And you are still standing here talking about money?!"

Mark stared at me, his lip trembling. "I... I was afraid," he whimpered like a child. "He’s controlled everything my whole life, Elena. If I stand up to him, he’ll destroy me. He has leverage on my firm, my assets... everything."

"You are a grown man!" I yelled. "And you failed to protect your own child!"

"Elena!"

We turned. Jenna stepped out from the hallway, holding a iron fireplace poker, her hair disheveled. She had smashed the lock on the guest room door.

"I have the flash drive," Jenna said, holding up a small black USB stick. "I got into his floor safe while he was leaving for the courthouse. The unedited videos are on here. All of them. Incident One, Incident Two, and the footage from yesterday morning."

"You traitor!" a sharp, thunderous voice roared from the entryway.

We all turned.

Arthur Vance stood in the foyer, wearing his dark wool coat, his leather gloves holding a small, sleek revolver.
