Chapter 6 - THE BLACK MAIL FILEHOOK: A hidden safe in a forgotten cabin reveals that Lucy wasn't Arthur's first victim.

Evelyn drove us two hours north into the deep woods of Upstate New York, stopping at a small, unpretentious log cabin tucked far off the main highway.

"Where are we?" I asked, shivering as we stepped into the dark cabin.

"My safe house," Evelyn said, flicking on a single desk lamp. "When Arthur divorced me twenty years ago, he used forged psychological evaluations to take full custody of Mark and Jenna, stripping me of every right I had. I was too young, too broke, and too terrified to fight back. But I never stopped gathering evidence."

She walked over to a heavy iron safe in the corner, punched in a six-digit code, and pulled out a thick leather binder stuffed with old photos, medical reports, and legal documents.

"Look at this," she said, opening the binder to a yellowed newspaper article from 1998.

I leaned in. The headline read: LOCAL JUVENILE ACCUSES PROSECUTOR OF SYSTEMATIC ABUSE; CASE DISMISSED.

"Arthur’s first wife—before me—had a son from a previous marriage," Evelyn explained, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "When the boy turned twelve—the exact same age Lucy is turning soon—Arthur started accusing the boy of severe behavioral disorders. He used micro-doses of environmental toxins to induce panic attacks and skin rashes, documenting everything on video."

"Oh my God," I gasped, my hand flying to my mouth. "He used the exact same blueprint!"

"Exactly," Evelyn said, tapping the paper. "He creates a medical crisis, gaslights the mother, uses his legal influence to isolate the child, and presents himself as the savior to the courts. He gets total control over the child’s trust fund and life, while destroying anyone who questions him."

"Wait... trust fund?" I paused. "What trust fund?"

Evelyn looked at me with deep pity. "Didn't Mark tell you? Lucy’s great-aunt—my sister—passed away six months ago. She left a three-million-dollar inheritance exclusively for Lucy, held in an irrevocable trust that activates on her twelfth birthday."

The air left my lungs.

"Mark never told me..." I stammered. "He said her aunt left her a small college fund!"

"Because Arthur forced Mark to keep it quiet," Evelyn stated coldly. "The trust terms stipulate that if Lucy is declared mentally or physically incapacitated, or if her primary legal parents are deemed unfit, control of the trust defaults to her legal guardian—which, as of three hours ago, is Arthur Vance."

The terrifying magnitude of Arthur’s plot crashed over me. It wasn't just a sick game of power and control. It was a multi-million-dollar heist orchestrated by a legal predator who was using his own family as chess pieces.

"We have to stop him," I said, my voice hardening from grief into pure, unadulterated fury. "We have to get Lucy back tonight."

"We can't just break into his house, Elena," Evelyn cautioned. "He has security cameras, armed guards, and the local police in his pocket. If we step foot on his property without concrete proof, he will have us thrown in prison for good."

"Then we don't go to his house," I said, a dark plan forming in my mind. "We go to his attorney. The man who signed off on that emergency petition."
