Chapter 7 - THE BREAKING POINTHOOK: An unexpected betrayal inside the enemy camp turns the tide.

At 6:00 AM on December 26th, we tracked down Attorney Richard Hayes, Arthur’s long-time legal strategist, at his private residence in the suburbs.

We didn't break in. Instead, I waited on his front porch until he came out in his bathrobe to collect the morning newspaper.

Before he could react, I stepped out of the shadows, holding a printed stack of the medical reports Evelyn had compiled—including the lab analysis of the Capsaicin-8 and the historical police filings from 1998.

"Mr. Hayes," I said coldly. "We need to talk about your client, Arthur Vance."

Hayes scoffed, adjusting his glasses. "Mrs. Vance? You’re trespassing. And you’re under a restraining order. I suggest you leave before I call Chief Bradley."

"Call him," I said, taking a step closer. "And while you have him on the phone, ask him how he thinks the State Bar Association will react when I leak these files to the Department of Justice. Files proving that you knowingly filed a fraudulent custody petition based on synthesized chemical injuries inflicted by your client."

Hayes’s face lost all its color. His eyes darted to the thick binder in my hands. "I... I don't know what you're talking about. Arthur presented sworn affidavits—"

"Arthur poisoned my daughter!" I snapped, my voice shaking with raw authority. "And you helped him kidnap her! If you don't call off that CPS petition right now and hand over the original footage Arthur recorded on his phone, I will burn your legal career to the ground by noon today."

Hayes swallowed hard, his throat working visibly. He looked around the quiet, snowy street, realizing he was caught in a crossfire that could ruin him.

"I didn't know about the chemical," Hayes whispered frantically. "I swear to you, Elena, I didn't know! Arthur just told me you were abusive! He gave me the edited audio files!"

"Then help me fix it," I demanded. "Where is the original, unedited video?"

"He has it on a secure cloud server," Hayes confessed, trembling. "He keeps the master key on a physical flash drive inside the floor safe in his study. But you'll never get to it. He has security guards monitoring the house."

"He won't stop me," I said.

Just as I turned to leave, my phone chimed. It was an encrypted text message from a satellite application.
