Chapter 3 - RECKONING IN THE LOBBY

"Pick Up the Peppermints—One by One—On Your Knees!"Brenda looked at the check on the floor, then up at Evan's cold, unyielding face.
"Mr. Hale, please!" she begged, throwing herself to her knees. All her pride, all her arrogance, all her years of terrorizing the weak had evaporated. She was now nothing more than a desperate woman begging to save her career. "I have a family! I have a mortgage! If you revoke my license, I will lose everything! I’ll be ruined!"
"My mother also had a family to support," Evan said, his voice ringing out across the lobby, commanding the attention of the dozens of onlookers. "She had a son who depended on her. When she worked three cleaning jobs, did anyone show her mercy when her rent was late? When she skipped meals so I could have a single bowl of rice, did the landlord care about her dignity?"
Evan took a step closer, pointing a long, accusing finger at the floor.
"You dropped my mother's belongings. You scattered her life onto this floor and laughed at her."
"I'll clean it! I'll clean it up!" Brenda sobbed, reaching out to grab the scattered peppermints.
"No," Evan commanded, his voice like thunder. "On your knees. You will pick up every single piece of candy. You will pick up her glasses. You will pick up her purse. And you will apologize to her with your face pressed to the tile."
The lobby was dead silent. Hundreds of onlookers watched as the once-terrifying, tyrannical head nurse Brenda crawled on her hands and knees across the cold marble.
With shaking hands, she picked up a peppermint.
Clink.
She placed it into the brown purse.
"I'm sorry," Brenda wept, her tears splashing onto the floor. "I'm so sorry, Mrs. Hale..."
Clink.
Another peppermint.
"I'm sorry..."
Clara sat in her wheelchair, her gentle heart clearly torn. She reached out, her frail hand shaking as she looked at her son. "Evan... that is enough. Please. It is enough."
Evan looked at his mother's swollen, bruised cheek. The anger inside him didn't fade, but his love for his mother overrode his desire for immediate destruction. He took a deep breath, signaling the security guards.
"Take her out of my sight," Evan ordered. "And call the police. I am pressing charges for felony assault on an elder."
As the security guards dragged a screaming, weeping Brenda away, Dr. Vance rushed forward. "Mr. Hale, we will get your mother admitted to our presidential suite immediately! The finest doctors, the best care—"
May you like
"No," Evan said coldly. "We are leaving this place. But before I go, Dr. Vance, you and I are going to have a very long conversation about who else in this hospital knew about Brenda's behavior. Because if I find out anyone protected her..."
Evan didn't finish the sentence. He didn't need to. The look in his eyes said it all.
