Chapter 4 - THE DARK SECRETS OF ST. AURELIA

"It Wasn't Just My Mother... How Deep Does the Rot Go?"Two hours later, Clara was safely resting in a private, state-of-the-art clinic owned by a close personal friend of Evan’s. The room was warm, filled with fresh flowers, and possessed a beautiful view of the city skyline.

Evan sat by his mother's bedside, gently holding her hand as she slept peacefully under the influence of mild pain relievers.

But Evan's mind was far from peaceful.

A gentle knock on the door broke his train of thought. It was Sarah, the young junior nurse who had spoken up in the lobby. She looked nervous, clutching a thick yellow manila folder to her chest.

"Mr. Hale?" she whispered. "May I come in?"

"Sarah," Evan said, rising from his chair. "Thank you for what you did today. It took a lot of courage to speak up against your boss."

"I couldn't watch it anymore, sir," Sarah said, her voice shaking as she handed him the folder. "But you need to see this. Brenda wasn't acting alone. She couldn't have gotten away with abusing patients and skimming money for fifteen years without protection from the very top."

Evan opened the folder. His eyes scanned the documents inside, and with every page he turned, his jaw tightened.

There were forged medical records, billing statements with massive, unexplained "administrative fees," and charity care applications that had been systematically denied. But the most damning evidence was a series of leaked emails between Brenda and the Chief Financial Officer of the hospital, Marcus Sterling—who happened to be Dr. Arthur Vance’s brother-in-law.

Email from Marcus Sterling to Brenda: "The audit is coming up. We need to clear out the long-term, non-paying patients in Ward 4. Do whatever you have to do to make them leave. If they complain, blame it on insurance. We can't let the board see how much charity care we're actually writing off. Our bonuses depend on it."

Evan’s grip on the folder was so tight the paper began to tear.

"They were running a racket," Evan whispered, his voice dangerously calm. "They were denying charity care to poor, dying patients, pocketing the government subsidies meant for those patients, and forcing them out onto the streets to die."

"Yes," Sarah said, crying silently. "And anyone who tried to report it was immediately fired and blacklisted from working in any hospital in the state. I was going to be next, Mr. Hale. Brenda told me yesterday that if I didn't help her clear out Ward 4, she would make sure I never worked as a nurse again."

Evan closed the folder. He looked at his sleeping mother, then at the brave young nurse standing before him.

"You won't be fired, Sarah," Evan said, his eyes burning with a cold, calculated fire. "In fact, I think it's time St. Aurelia Medical Center got a brand new leadership team. Call a press conference for tomorrow morning. I am going to expose every single one of them."
