Chapter 5 - NO WAY OUT

"The Police Are in the Lobby, Brenda."Meanwhile, back at St. Aurelia, panic had set in.
In the executive offices on the top floor, Dr. Arthur Vance and his brother-in-law, CFO Marcus Sterling, were frantically shredding documents. The room smelled of burnt paper and desperation.
"We’re ruined, Arthur! Absolutely ruined!" Marcus paced back and forth, tearing at his hair. "Evan Hale is a billionaire! He has the resources to dig into every single account we’ve ever touched! If he finds the offshore accounts, we’re going to federal prison!"
"Calm down!" Dr. Vance yelled, though his own hands were shaking so badly he could barely feed papers into the shredder. "We just need to pin everything on Brenda! She’s the one who physically assaulted his mother. We didn't know about her methods! We were just looking at the financial statements!"
Suddenly, the heavy mahogany door to the office was kicked open.
Two police officers stepped inside, followed by Evan’s personal security team. Leading them was none other than Evan Hale himself.
"It’s too late to shred, gentlemen," Evan said, stepping into the room. Behind him, Sarah stood holding a digital tablet. "We’ve already bypassed your local servers. My cybersecurity team has spent the last three hours downloading every single deleted email, transaction history, and offshore transfer from your system."
Marcus Sterling dropped to his knees, his face white as paper. "Mr. Hale... please. We can reach an agreement. We can refund every dollar! We can give you whatever you want!"
"What I want," Evan said, walking over to Marcus and looking down at him with utter disgust, "is justice for every single family you broke. For every elderly grandmother you threw out into the cold. For every child who was denied treatment because you wanted a bigger bonus."
The police officers stepped forward, pulling out handcuffs.

"Arthur Vance, Marcus Sterling, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit medical fraud, embezzlement of federal charity funds, and corporate negligence," the lead officer declared, clicking the metal cuffs around their wrists.
As they were being led out of the office in shame, they passed Brenda, who was being held in a holding cell on the first floor. She looked up, her eyes hollow, realizing that the empire of cruelty she had helped build had completely crumbled in less than twelve hours.
